Saurashtra University students complain about unemployment, exam paper leaks, education costs

A steady hum of complaints about unemployment, exam paper leaks, and rising education costs. SU students question development in education, and health.

education news 33

Amid recurring voices of approval for prime minister Narendra Modi and, in turn, the BJP from students of Saurashtra University (SU), there is a less frequent but steady hum of complaints about unemployment, exam papers getting leaked and price rise.

The BJP, many students say, has brought ‘vikas’ by building roads, and improving power and water supply but some of them also question its record on education and health. And it is not the Congress, traditionally the BJP’s main rival, but ‘jhadu’, as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is often referred, which seems to have got the attention of some of these first-time assembly poll voters.

AAP ka vichar achchha hai education par (AAP’s ideas about education is good),” says Ranva Dalip, who hails from Morbi and is a first-year master’s student. Though he adds quickly that the party will take time coming up in a big way. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal-led party’s high decibel campaign focussed on the issues of education and health besides corruption has its share of takers on the campus of the region’s main university which draws students from across its various districts. While many poll watchers believe that the Congress remains the closest rival to the BJP in the state, most of these young voters find the party an unattractive choice, providing the AAP a ready space to step in.

MCA student Darshan Jethva, who is from Amreli, says the Congress is a “dying” party whose leaders are heard only during elections. “This time they have not been heard much even during the polls,” he says referring to the party’s rather subdued campaign, as the group of students around him laugh. There is one figure, however, who rises above the mixed emotions any debate on election triggers to command wide support and admiration.

As per the plan, in case of failure or low marks in exams, the students will be promoted to the next class. However, they will have to appear for a re-examination of the previous year’s syllabus. The syllabus will be changed every 10 years.

At present, students of classes 1 to 8 are promoted to the next class without an exam. However, schools do undertake continuous evaluation according to the Right to Education (RTE) Act. Reports on education in schools based on a third-party evaluation have found that students in state are lagging academically due to the policy of promoting them.

As per Kerala’s pattern, exams will be conducted every month and every quarter in addition to the annual practice exams. For the past few days, officials from the education department have been studying educational experiments by various states, including Kerala, Rajasthan, Punjab, Goa, and Delhi. “After studying all these states’ education policies, the minister has decided to go with the Kerala policy with some modifications,” said Kailash Pagare, state project director, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.

Welcoming the government’s decision, former state board chairperson and senior education expert Basanti Roy said the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 mandates examinations for classes 3, 5 and 8. “If these exams are conducted universally, we will be able to better analyse results and academic performance of the students. If results are made public, we will also be able to understand the educational quality of each school,” said Roy.

How a combination of online and traditional education might help India's talent shortage

Nitin Varma

In a society severely affected by the COVID pandemic, where every aspect of life—including work, education, and play—has been altered in some way, online has emerged as the “New Normal.” Online work and education have allowed millions of people around the world to continue their studies and save numerous jobs in the new normal.

The field of education has experienced a paradigm-shifting change thanks to online learning. The Covid-19 time, not only enhanced the educational and learning process, but it also aided in the introduction of a lot of novel ideas and innovations. It has greatly raised educational standards and supported the growth of skills in remote and rural areas. Additionally, it has ensured that receiving a high-quality education is convenient, affordable, and easy to acquire.

However, in the post-Covid era, many people are unsure of whether to balance online and offline learning or to choose one over the other. This problem can be resolved by combining online and offline education. “A combination of online learning techniques and offline learning sessions through practical training can solve India’s skill crisis,” said Varun Gupta, founder of IMTS Noida. “This will help produce a workforce that is equipped for employment.”

“Online learning can enhance the learning process, whilst offline learning might focus it more on application. A workforce with knowledge and skills can be produced with a balanced blend of online and offline blended learning. The main benefit of blended learning is that it provides “the best of both worlds,” combining the advantages of online learning with those of traditional classroom instruction “added Gupta.

IndiaEducation Counselling

One of the main barriers to India’s inaccessible educational system can be eliminated by blended learning. After China and the US, India has the third-largest higher education system, but access to higher education, especially equitable higher education, is still problematic for a variety of reasons, from affordability to opportunity.

This issue can be quickly solved with blended learning. Students not only save on course costs but also a variety of other benefits like moving expenses and other overheads.

In a labor market like India, where the skill gap is widening, blended learning may show to be a more efficient and expedient way to develop skilled labor. According to a recent Skillsoft 2022 IT Skills and Salary Report, the skills gap is substantially wider, especially in the information technology sector.

By 2026, India is expected to have a shortage of 14–19 lakh ICT professionals, according to a different Nasscom–Zinnov research.

This gap can be filled effectively and affordably with a combination of online and offline learning. India can seize this chance to use technology to improve and revolutionize education in the country, making it more democratic and leveling the playing field.
