A lesson from the IIT: Is BTech a suitable career choice for women? An ex-IIT director clarifies

“More women engineers would have created goods that were appropriate for Indian women and girls. IITs made the decision to recruit more female students for BTech in order to increase the number of female engineers in India and improve both domestic and international product quality.”

A Lesson from IIT

In India, 30 of every 100 engineers with a degree are women. There are 20 female applicants for every 100 BTech admissions at IITs. Women engineers and technocrats are prevalent at both the junior and senior levels in a wide range of industries, including energy, automotive, construction, IT, and more. There is no doubt that BTech is a fantastic career choice for ladies today, as thousands of female engineers show every day.

Engineers create products that make people’s lives easier. They locate issues in daily life and create products to address them. Selling these items generates profits for the companies, allowing them to pay their engineers well. Some instances: Saloni Malhotra founded DesiCrew in 2004 to offer online IT services from small towns and villages after receiving her BTech from Bharati Vidyapeeth. Currently, 1,000 individuals work with DesiCrew in rural India supplying clients all over the world.

In 2011,  Richa Singh graduated with a BDes from IIT Guwahati. She observed that students’ mental health is a growing issue. She co-founded the online mental health counselling service YourDost in 2014. Several IITs have chosen YourDost as their official counselling partner.

Most engineers work for private companies, however a handful start their own. Others work for the government designing and constructing highways, public structures, and computer systems that serve the general populace.

Why is it important to IITs to draw more female students?

In Indian households, women typically use the kitchen. Because the kitchen counter is too high for your mother or aunt, you might have seen them stooping. To access the cabinets above the counter, she uses a stool. Why don’t we plan the kitchen to accommodate the 5-foot-tall average Indian woman? because Indian and European men who are 5 to 9 inches taller than Indian women construct kitchens.

I am sure that there are several other examples of things utilised by girls and women that are inappropriate for them because they were created by male engineers. The goods that female engineers design would be appropriate for Indian women and girls if there were more of them. IITs made the decision to recruit more female students for BTech in order to increase the number of female engineers in India and improve both domestic and international product quality.

In order to expose the challenges with private schools and develop a plan for resolving problems that affect the delivery of education, the symposium also featured a number of panel discussions with stakeholders from private schools and education professionals.

Delhi AAP MLA Atish saysi

Tuesday, Delhi AAP MLA Atishi said that Karnataka should concentrate on enhancing the quality of education and facilities in government schools rather than attempting to regulate private schools. She was speaking at a state-level education conference in Bengaluru.

AAP MLA(Atishi), who is also the head of the education committee of the Delhi Assembly, claimed that because of the government’s authoritarianism, management staff at private schools are hopping from one job to another rather than concentrating on growing their institutions. The government’s failure to adequately manage government schools is the reason why parents in Karnataka choose private schools and are required to pay high tuition. Government schools are in poor condition, teachers aren’t present in the classrooms, kids don’t have a bench to sit on, there’s no running water, and there aren’t clean restrooms, which is prompting parents to enrol their kids in private schools, according to Atishi.

She continued, “By introducing rules, the government is harassing private schools. These rules are in place so that private school administrators can appear before lawmakers and kneel down to them. The government should concentrate on promoting government schools rather than regulating and trying to regulate private schools.

IITs Five year Data

The main one is still Computer Science due to its flexible curriculum and industry-focused courses. Although there can be other potential explanations. IIT introduced new courses

According to admission data from the previous five years, the top 1,000 JEE-Advanced rankers are choosing IIT Hyderabad and IIT Indore alongside more established and older IITs. These two second generation IITs were both founded in 2008.

The institutes claim that the students are choosing them because of their flexible curriculum, industry-focused courses, including those on cutting-edge technology, emphasis on entrepreneurship, and multidisciplinary approach.

Find out which international universities accept the JEE for admissions by reading this.

40 of the top 1,000 students confirmed their admission to IIT Hyderabad for the 2022 academic year, up from the 23 in the category in 2018. The institute likewise saw a skewed growth throughout that time. On the other hand, IIT Indore observed a change in the number of seats in last five years but constantly fall in the category.

IIT Hyderabad’s director, B S Murty, ascribed the change to the provided courses and curricula. According to him, the school offers a double major option and has a multidisciplinary credit structure. Students who have GPAs over 8 might choose to earn two BTech degrees.

Murty claims that IIT Hyderabad supports entrepreneurship as well.

IIT introduced new courses

Murty continued, “In a brave move, students are permitted a semester vacation if they want to concentrate on an inventive project. I envision a future where nobody will talk wage packages and the focus moves from creating job-seekers to job-creators. Students can earn up to six credits for the innovation, which may or may not succeed, with the remaining credits being made up in other minor courses. Additionally, 1 lakh rupees in seed money is given to students for their ideas. Since no other IIT uses credit scores for internships, we revised the curriculum with input from the business world. This makes it possible for the crucial industries to connect.

Suhas S. Joshi, the director of IIT Indore, stated that the university was “adapting to the changing global environment with several modifications of existing courses” and had introduced four BTech programmes for the 2023–2024 academic year: Chemical Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, Engineering Physics, and Space Science and Engineering.

“By including more hands-on training through lab work, internships, and fieldwork, the course syllabi and content are structured. Students can choose from a variety of multidisciplinary courses that aid in a variety of job placement prospects. To interact with the industries in our neighbourhood, we have undertaken a number of activities, according to Joshi.

According to IIT Indore director Suhas S. Joshi, the school has four BTech programmes in chemical engineering, mathematics and computing, engineering physics, and space science and engineering as part of its effort to “adapt to the changing global environment with several modifications of existing courses.”

The course syllabi and material are designed by providing more hands-on training through lab work, internships, and fieldwork. Multidisciplinary courses are available for students to select from, and they can help with a range of job placement opportunities. We have engaged in a lot of activities to engage with the industries in our neighbourhood, claims Joshi.

However, Computer Science Engineering remains the most popular course (CSE).

The CSE opening rank at IIT Hyderabad in 2022 was 360, while the CSE closing rank was 560. Three branches in total had opening ranks under 1000, and two of them also had closing ranks below the figure. CSE began with a rank of 671 and finished with a position of 1204 at IIT Indore.

News Survey: Improved gender equality, declining school dropout rates

Economic Survey

The Economic Survey for 2022–23 noted that the GER for girls is higher than that for males in similar age groups in primary and upper-primary levels.

According to the Economic Survey for 2022–23, which was presented to Parliament on Tuesday, there has been a sustained decrease in the school dropout rate and an increase in enrollment in both secondary and higher education.

According to the survey, which was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in     the union budget, gender parity also improved this fiscal year.

“The Gross Enrolment Ratios (GER) in the primary-enrollment in Classes 1 to 5 as a percentage of the population in age six to 10 years – for girls, as well as boys, has improved throughout the financial year (FY),” the statement reads.

It said that “the GER in upper-primary (enrolment in class 6 to 8 as a per cent of the population in age 11–13 years), which was stable between FY-17 and FY-19, increased in FY-22.” This recovery has “reversed the downward trends between FY-17 and FY-19,” it noted.

The Economic Survey for 2022–23 noted that the GER for girls is higher than that for males in similar age groups in primary and upper-primary levels.

According to the statement, “In FY-22, school enrollment stood at 26.5 crore children with 19.4 lakh extra students enrolling in primary to higher-secondary levels.”

According to the report, there are 22.7 lakh children with special needs (CWSN) overall in FY-22, up from 21.9 lakh in FY-21, or a 3.3% rise.

“With the exception of pre-primary, enrollment rose at all levels—primary, upper-primary, secondary, and higher secondary. Enrollment decreased from 1.1 crore in FY-21 to one crore in FY-22 at the pre-primary level, the report stated.

About one crore children were enrolled in pre-primary school, 12.2 crore in primary, 6.7 crore in upper primary, 3.9 crore in secondary, and 2.9 crore in higher secondary during the course of the year, it stated.

Boys’ and girls’ school dropout rates across all grade levels have steadily decreased in recent years.

According to the survey, the availability of teachers, as determined by the pupil-teacher ratio, has continually increased at all levels from FY-13 to FY-22. This statistic is negatively connected to improvements in educational quality.

According to the report, the improvement occurred between FY-13 and FY-22, going from 34.0 to 26.2 at the primary level, 23 to 19.6 at the upper-primary level, 30.0 to 17.6 at the secondary level, and 39.0 to 27.1 at the higher-secondary level.

According to the survey, more schools, more teachers who are available, and better school facilities should increase enrollment and lower dropout rates.

“The overall number of students enrolled in higher education climbed from 3.9 million in FY20 to about 4.1 million in FY21. Since FY-15, enrollment has increased by almost 72 lakh (21 per cent). According to the report, there are now two crore women enrolled, up from 1.9 crore in FY-20.

“There are 45.7 lakh students enrolled in remote learning (20.9 lakh of whom are female), up about 7% from FY-20 and 20% from FY-15. According to 2011 population forecasts (updated), the GER in higher education was 27.3 percent in FY-21, up from 25.6 percent in FY-20, it said.

According to the poll, the GER for men climbed from 24.8 in FY-20 to 26.7 in FY-21, while the GER for women improved from 26.4 to 27.9 over the same time period.

The state government launched the learning recovery programme in May 2022 to close the achievement gap among students as a result of the pandemic.

Student's learning outcomes

The State Learning Achievement Survey among students in government schools was completed by the Karnataka School Quality Assessment & Accreditation Council in order to evaluate the learning outcomes of students on various criteria, particularly following the introduction of the Kalika Chetarike (learning recovery) programme.

The state government launched the learning recovery programme in May 2022 to close the achievement gap among students as a result of the epidemic. The method assigns grades to pupils in a concentric manner and evaluates them using workbooks and hands-on learning.

The survey was also done to evaluate students’ learning progress over the previous few years. Over 2.1 lakh students in grades 3, 5, 8, 9, and 10 participated in the survey, which was conducted in 3,308 government institutions. Students in classes 3 and 5 were evaluated on their language and numeracy skills as well as their knowledge of the environment. Students in classes 8, 9, and 10 were evaluated based on their knowledge of language, arithmetic, science, and social science.

Students from classes 9 and 10 have been included in the study, according to Gopalakrishna HN, director (exams) of the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB), because they were in classes 7 and 8 respectively during the pandemic and advanced to high school level without attending regular classes. “The analysis is under progress, and the survey is finished. We need to evaluate about 10 lakh student answer sheets that are descriptive before we can release the report, which might have been released last week in February. Earlier in 2016, an all-student survey was done; however, this time, in light of the pandemic and the launch of a learning recovery programme, we have chosen a random sample.

The state government originally earmarked land in Shel-Melaulim hamlet in Sattari taluka of North Goa district for the proposed IIT campus. However, following protests, the plan was dropped.

New IIT Campus

A new IIT campus would be built in Goa’s south, according to the chief minister of Goa. For the future IIT campus, the government is currently looking for a suitable plot of land.

The IIT campus was originally intended to be built on land specified by the state government in Shel-Melaulim hamlet in Sattari taluka of North Goa district; however, the proposal was later postponed in 2021 as a consequence of violent local protests.

Later, another plot of land in the South Goa district’s Sanguem taluka near Cotarli was found; however, because it was insufficient, the project was abandoned last year. The subject was covered during the Goa Assembly’s most recent winter session.

The IIT campus will be established in South Goa, Sawant told reporters on Monday. There is a search for the land. In the state Assembly, the chief minister had earlier claimed that certain people were protesting the purchase of land for the IIT Goa site.

IndiaEducation Counselling

He had declined to disclose the location of the identified land because he feared “unnecessary opposition.” Congress MLA Altone D’Costa, who represents the Quepem Assembly sector in South Goa, requested the state government to establish the IIT campus near his constituency during a discussion on the matter in the House. He had claimed that there was space at Betul in the Quepem constituency to build the campus of the institute.
