Philippines Engineering College Students Wear 'Creative Anti-Cheating Hats', Professor Says 'Reminder of Integrity'

Professor Mandane-Ortiz told the news daily that the idea behind the anti-cheating hats was inspired by a technique used in Thailand some years ago

Students at a college in Legazpi City, Philippines were asked to wear anti-cheating headgear to prevent them from peeking at other students’ papers. Students, however, brought out their creativity by making hats out of cardboard, egg boxes and other recycled materials.

The teacher, Mary Joy Mandane-Ortiz, a professor of mechanical engineering at Bicol University College of Engineering said she had been looking for a “fun way” to ensure “integrity and honesty” in her classes. The idea has been implemented for the mid-term exams. It had been “really effective”, she told BBC.

The professor said her initial request had been for students to make a “simple” design out of paper. Prof Mandane-Ortiz said some of the students made such innovative headgear in “just five minutes” while some students donned hats, helmets or Halloween masks.

“The aim of education is the knowledge not of facts but of values” – William Ralph Inge. Congratulations students because many appreciated the creative anti-cheating hats you made not only national but international. The anti-cheating hat is a reminder of integrity. But my students added more colourful and deep meaning that “We can learn while having fun”. Thank you, students, for giving happiness and inspiration to the whole world,” the professor wrote in one of her social media posts.

“Thank you very much to all who appreciated and made me happy because of the Anti-cheating Hat of my students. So proud of my students. Congrats,” she wrote in another post.

Mandane-Ortiz told the news daily that the idea behind the anti-cheating hats was inspired by a technique used in Thailand some years ago. In 2013, an image went viral showing a room of university students in Bangkok taking the exam while wearing “ear flaps” sheets of paper stuck to either side of their heads so as not to peek at others’ copies.

Earlier, during a chemistry exam at Bhagat Pre-University College in Haveri, Karnataka, India, students were made to wear boxes, which were cut open on one side. This too was taken to prevent cheating. After the images went viral on social media, the college received flak and the administrator apologised to district officials. He had said that the school used the anti-cheating measure on an “experimental basis” after hearing of its use somewhere else.

Crossing all financial hurdles, the daughter of a farmer, Aishwarya Shrikrishna Pawar, has secured a master’s seat at the University of Alberta, Canada. A native of Satara district in Maharashtra, after completing her 10th and 12th from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, she was in a dilemma about what to do next. “Financial problems are predominant problems that hinder the growth of hundreds of brilliant minds in society,” said Aishwarya.

With a CGPA of 9 in class 10 and 83 per cent in class 12, she, however, got a scholarship to help her achieve her dreams. After completing school, her mother came across an advertisement for a Vidyadhan scholarship. Aishwarya cracked the entrance exam and completed her graduation from the Shivaji University, Kolhapur’s School of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. It was there that she realised her love for nanoscience and technology.

At the University of Alberta, she is “seeking to leverage her knowledge and experience in significant research fields like polymers, energy and biochemical engineering, nanofabrication and material science.”

At present, she is working on “reversibility of ZnO-Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites on degrading methylene blue” at the varsity’s Chemicals and Materials Engineering department.

“During my second year of graduation, I worked on polymer-based bioplastics developing a method of preparing antibacterial bio-plastic with the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles and bioplastic films both from the same raw material – starch in a single step. This project integrated my passion for research as the article acquired the best paper award in the National Research Writing Competition,” Aishwarya.

“I worked on photo-catalytic dye degradation the same year and successfully degraded insecticide “Imidacloprid” – a pollutant by Fe 3 O 4 -silver nanocomposites. Being in the top 5 students in the class during graduation, I maintained an appreciable academic record and also actively participated in co-curricular activities,” she added.

Currently, she is also working as a part-time teacher taking home tuition for secondary students along with her master’s abroad. She also secured 7 bands in the IELTS exam last year, which is an English language proficiency test conducted for higher education and global migration.
