Aligarh Muslim University: Fee Hike, Post-Covid Fear Push Number of International Students at AMU to Record Low

AMU claims that the numbers have fallen drastically due to unconducive international conditions and panic and chaos created by the coronavirus pandemic.

JEE Advanced 2022 Prakash Rathod bagged AIR 1 in the SC PwD category. 6

The number of international students taking admissions at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has reached a record low. In 1997, AMU hosted 747 international students from around 37 countries. Till pre-covid levels the university used to enroll around 800 students, however, now only 228 foreign students are at AMU campus representing 21 countries.

AMU claims that the numbers have fallen drastically due to unconducive international conditions and panic and chaos created by the coronavirus pandemic. Notably, during the peak of coronavirus last year, the varsity had reported several deaths including the demise of 17 professors within 18 days.

AMU adviser of the International Students Cell, S Ali Nawaz Zaidi is in constant touch with those international students who wish to study at AMU. Zaidi is listening to their concerns.

Zaidi said that when he interacted with the students, they said that the fee at AMU is more compared to some private institutions. Zaidi said that AMU revised its fee structure last year and now it has been upwardly revised. So, this too is an issue with the students.

“We have increased our fees as we have to strengthen our financial conditions. We are also required to upgrade the quality of our education at our campus and that is why we are not paying much attention to increasing only the number of students at AMU. That is why we are talking to students,” he said.

“University is only now completely open after a gap of two years. Even though we were expecting that post-Covid-19, the number of international students will come down because the pandemic had a devastating effect on political and economic conditions all over the world,” said Zaidi.

Zaidi said that the number of foreign students has gone down in past years and presently admission for the academic year 2022-23 is undergoing at the campus and we are hopeful that the number of international students this year will increase.

CUET 2022 Updates: West Bengal State Universities Not Using CUET For Admission To UG Courses

On Sunday, the official authorities said that none of the state universities in West Bengal have adopted CUET UG 2022 scores for admission to UG courses.

JEE Advanced 2022 Prakash Rathod bagged AIR 1 in the SC PwD category. 5

None of the state universities in West Bengal have adopted the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG model for admission to undergraduate courses, authorities said on Sunday. Vice-Chancellor of Diamond Harbour Women’s University Soma Bandyopadhyay told PTI, “we have conducted the entrance test as directed by the state higher education department.”

“Being a state university, we devise the admission criteria going by the directives of the state higher education department. There is no way we can adopt the CUET method or prepare any new merit list,” she said.

The state-run Jadavpur University has already conducted it’s own entrance tests for UG courses for various departments, Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association spokesperson Partha Pratim Roy said.

“No way we can adopt the CUET path for an institution like Jadavpur University which follows rigorous high-level admission procedures. All our disciplines – Science, Arts and Engineering – maintain high academic standards due to this admission process by JU. The uniform CUET route is not applicable for JU,” he said.

Private St Xavier’s University also held it’s own entrance tests offline this year. St Xavier’s University Vice-Chancellor Father Felix Raj said “We are not going by the CUET route.” Officials of Presidency University, Vidyasagar University, Bardhaman University, MAKAUT, North Bengal University, West Bengal University of Technology also said they have adhered to their own admission process as envisaged by the state higher education department. There will not be any CUET UG merit lists or counselling for state varsities, officials said.

A Visva-Bharati University spokesperson said the Central university, having UG courses in different disciplines, has adopted the CUET route. “The CUET eligibility criteria will be followed both for students of Patha Bhavan and Siksha Satra (higher secondary level educational units run by Visva Bharati) and students from outside. But there will be a little bit lowering of the cut-off mark for internal students (those having studied here up to 12th level,” the spokesperson said.
Spokesperson of Presidency University Students Union, Debnil Paul said, “We oppose the attempt to thrust one uniform admission test criteria on all higher educational institutions across the country. This does not take into account the academic autonomy issue of institutions like the Presidency.”The results of the CUET-UG were declared on September 16 by the National Testing Agency (NTA). “The merit lists will be prepared by participating universities who will decide about their individual counselling on the basis of CUET UG score card,” said Sadhana Parashar, Senior Director (Exams), NTA.
