Women made up a small but growing percentage of engineering students in India between 2014 and 2021. In 2014, only 3,000 women attempted to enter IIT, but by 2021, that number had increased to 6,400. Women made up 15.4% of the qualified applicants pool and 31% of the student body across all engineering schools that applied for ranking under NIRF.

JEE Advanced Notices A Continuous Rise In Female Students Qualifying For The Exam

The number of women passing the JEE-Advanced – the gateway exam for admission to 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) – has steadily risen from 2014 to 2021, an analysis of exam statistics.

Engineering programs in India have been mainly populated by men throughout the years. The latest National Institute Ranking Framework report that was released last month by the Education Ministry shows that 69% of students enrolled in engineering colleges are male. This leaves women at 31% of the student body across all engineering schools that applied to be ranked under NIRF.

The IITs are conforming to the general trend; however, women are gradually becoming more prevalent on IIT campuses. An analysis of JEE-Advanced data points to the change taking place.

The number of women qualifying JEE-Advanced and being eligible for admission to the IITs has been increasing over the years. In 2014, approximately 3,000 women qualified, making up 11% of the total pool of qualified candidates. In 2021, that number increased to 6,400, comprising 15.4% of all qualified candidates.

These trends are in line with the increasing number of women taking JEE-Advanced, one of the toughest competitive exams in the country. In 2014, women made up 17.90% of all students who took the exam. By 2021, that number had increased to 22.83%.

Professor V Ramgopal Rao, former director of IIT-Delhi, attributes the uptick in women’s participation in JEE-Advanced to the social programs undertaken by the IITs. For instance, four years ago, the IITs introduced supernumerary seats reserved for women. “The hope is that women who make it to IITs will act as role models for other girls. More women are taking JEE exams and are beginning to do well which is a good sign,” he said.

Rao noted that he believes an increasing number of women will compete in JEE in the future. “When you look at the proportion of boys to girls in grades 11 and 12, it’s similar. So, we should expect to see a similar ratio when it comes to JEE-Advanced as well.”

A former IIT-JEE chairman, who wished to remain anonymous, said their data indicates that a number of high-achieving girls qualify for JEE-Advanced but they do not attend IITs because of various social reasons.

The former chairman also said that several women students from IITs have addressed parents of girls about the advantages of a multidisciplinary education at the premier institutions. He said that the landscape of engineering education has changed during various orientation programs organized routinely and that now it is more in favor of women.

Number Of Women Qualifying For The JEE Advanced Exam Has Been Increased

The number of women taking and passing the JEE-Advanced exam – the gateway to admission into 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) – has risen steadily from 2014 to 2021, according to an analysis of exam statistics by The Indian Express. This is due in part to the growing awareness and importance of women in STEM fields, and the JEE-Advanced is one way to showcase their skills and abilities. Additionally, the JEE-Advanced offers an opportunity for women to learn more about the engineering field and what it has to offer them in terms of career options and growth potential.

B.Tech programs have been male-dominated in India for a long time. The latest National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) report released by the Education Ministry last month shows that 69% of enrolment in engineering colleges are of men, with women making up only 31% of the student body across all engineering schools that applied for ranking under NIRF.

While the IITs may be better known for the number of men enrolled, women are beginning to turn the tide and make their presence more known on campus. An analysis of JEE-Advanced data suggests that this shift is beginning to take place slowly but surely.

In 2014, there were about 3,000 women who qualified for JEE-Advanced and were eligible for admission to the IITs. That year, they made up 11% of the total pool of qualified candidates. In 2021, that number has increased to roughly 6,400 girls, who now make up 15.4% of the total number of qualified candidates.

A former chairman of the IIT-JEE exam, who wished to remain anonymous, said that their data shows many qualified girls do not attend IITs for various social reasons.

“If the number of girls in IITs were increased to 20 percent, they would automatically start becoming role models for other students and dispel the misconceptions that mechanical engineering is not for girls, or that opting for technical institutions closer to home is not as good as the IIT experience,” he said.

Women students of IITs have been increasingly vocal about the advantages of multidisciplinary education at the premier institutions. They say that the landscape of engineering education has changed in favor of women during various orientation programs organized routinely. The former chairman said this is a welcome development.

The National Medical Commission (NMC), which oversees medical education, updated two psychiatric modules and six forensic medicine courses to make the curriculum more accepting of the LGBTQ+ community.

Among the changes are omitting “lesbianism” and sodomy from the list of unnatural sexual offences, defining the relationship between voyeurism, exhibitionism, and masochism as sexual fetishes as opposed to mental disorders, and emphasizing that the two-finger test for virginity is “unscientific, inhuman, and discriminatory.”

Instead of discussions on the medico-legal significance of the hymen, which were still taught in medical courses despite the Supreme Court has declared it to be unconstitutional years ago, the modified virginity test module instructs students on “how to apprise courts about the unscientific basis of these tests if the court orders it.”

In psychiatry, the curriculum emphasizes studying the range of gender and sexual preferences. The pupils will receive instruction on gender dysphoria, sexual dysfunctions, and human sexuality without classification.

Education Ministry Report On IIT Programmes in Data Science, AI and Robotics

IMG 20220825 WA0007

Offshore IIT campuses should offer undergraduate degree programs in data science, Artificial Intelligence, robotics, mining, and energy, the Education ministry has recommended.

The report, which is being considered by the Centre, has outlined a few prospective courses that have been decided based on feedback from Indian embassies abroad. These embassies reached out to the authorities of the host nations in order to gauge the demand for various disciplines in their respective countries. By considering this feedback, the Centre has been able to get a better understanding of which courses would be in higher demand internationally.

The survey conducted showed that a majority of the universities located in the nations initially targeted have undergraduate programs in more traditional disciplines. However, from the feedback given by ambassadors of the identified host nations, the most popular disciplines now are related to computer science or Information Technology, data sciences, AI, machine learning or robotics, electrical, electronics, mining, metallurgy,

The committee recommended varied modes of admission, including JEE, GATE, JAM, SAT, and GRE for offshore campuses. It also prescribed a minimum intake to start the programs: three to 40 per year for UG courses, and 15-20 in the case of PG courses. The faculty-student ratio should be 1:10 in line.

The style of faculty recruitment in India, which involves life-long appointments, is different from the model advocated in the report. The report says that flexibility should be given to institutions to negotiate salary and terms with candidates.

The committee also identified provisions for deputing faculty members from the existing IITs to the proposed institutes abroad, particularly in their formative years, along with a suggestion that joint recruitment of faculty could be explored.

A Board of Governors (BoG) model, which is currently in place at domestic Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), is likely to be replicated for the offshore campuses. The BoG should comprise individuals from both the host country and India, representing diverse fields such as academics, industry, and public service, the government said.
