Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, chairman of the University Grants Commission, held a meeting with vice-chancellors of all central universities to discuss various issues related to higher education. In the meeting, all UGC bureau heads were present to answer queries from the VCs. “We spent almost two hours discussing various issues related to higher education,” the UGC chairman tweeted.

The UGC, or University Grants Commission, approved the draft guidelines for engaging ‘Professors of Practice‘ in universities and colleges earlier on Tuesday. The decision came after the 560th meeting of the UGC and will be soon made public for feedback by stakeholders. The decision was taken to promote the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which seeks to transform higher education by focusing on skill-based education to meet the needs of the industry and the economy.

To ensure that youth are appropriately skilled, learners and employers must think from each other’s perspectives. To promote this initiative, the UGC has created a new position called ‘Professor of Practice,’ in which industry and other professional experts will teach in academic institutions.

He added that the move would provide additional faculty resources in higher education institutions (HEIs). “This will help to bring real-world practices and experiences into the classrooms. In turn, the industry and society will benefit from better-trained graduates equipped with the relevant skills,” the UGC Chairman said.

The goals for these guidelines include creating courses and curricula that will help with industry and societal needs. This way, Higher Education Institutions will be able to collaborate with industry experts on research projects and other services that would be beneficial for all parties involved. Another objective is to get experts from various fields, such as engineering, entrepreneurship, media, etc., into academic institutions.

Sachin Das Arrested by Kerala Police Who Prepared Fake Education Certificate For Swapna Suresh

A man was apprehended by the Kerala Police in Punjab in connection with the Swapna Suresh fake education certificate case. Sachin Das was arrested by the Thiruvananthapuram Cantonment police in Amritsar earlier on Tuesday. Das is accused of giving fake certificates of Ambedkar University to people like Swapna Suresh.

Kerala Police have alleged that gold smuggling accused Swapna Suresh got a job in Space Park by producing fake certificates. Swapna Suresh was suspended from her duties after the gold smuggling case came into the public eye.

An investigation recently conducted found that Swapna Suresh had received a fabricated certification from the Babasaheb Ambedkar Technical University of Maharashtra. This document was then used as part of the application process for a position at Space Park. The person responsible for the falsification, Sachin Das, was taken into custody by Cantonment Police from Amritsar. He will be transported to Kerala via train by the police.

According to sources, a gold smuggling case accused Swapna Suresh used to earning around Rs 3.18 lakhs per month from her job. However, after the revelation of the smuggling case, Suresh was stripped of her position in the Space Park company and it was ordered that her salary would be recovered from her.

Gold Smuggling case

Sarith PS, a worker at the UAE Consulate, was brought into jail when Thiruvananthapuram Airport customs officers seized 30 kilograms of gold worth Rs 15 crore from a diplomatic consignment sent to a person there on July 5, 2020. The case then gained traction when Swapna Suresh, a former employee of the consulate, and M Sivasankar, then-chief minister of Kerala, were arrested in connection with the scam. In connection with complaints made by the Kerala police, ED, and Customs, Swapna was detained.

On November 6, 2021, Swapna was released after obtaining bail in every case and her imprisonment under COFEPOSA was revoked. The accused persons allegedly gathered money by exploiting import shipments addressed to diplomats at the UAE Consulate General in Thiruvananthapuram and smuggled 167 kg of gold between November 2019 and June 2020, according to the charge sheet.

JEE-Advanced Enrollments At A Nine-Year Low

Over the years, there has been a steady decline in the number of students who register for the JEE-Mains exam. In 2014, 83.1 percent of students registered, but by 2022 that number had dropped to 61.5 percent.

JEE-Advanced enrollments at a nine-year low

Critics argue that the reason other engineering colleges are chosen based on JEE-Mains scores is that students are not aware of the benefits of an IIT education. Others suggest that students may not be interested in the IITs because they are not well-rounded enough.

The data shows that the number of candidates registering for the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)-Advanced exam after clearing the JEE-Mains exam has been dropping over the last eight years. This trend indicates that fewer and fewer students are interested in taking the JEE-Advanced exam, which is the second tier of the two-tier structure of the exam.

The percentage of students taking the exam has been declining over the past 9 years, from 83.1% in 2014 to 61.5% in 2022. Out of the 2.6 lakh qualified candidates, only 1.6 lakh have registered to write the exam scheduled for August 28th.

Every year, thousands of students take the final level of the examination to determine their admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology. In 2021, 1.5 lakh out of the 2.6 lakh candidates (58.1 percent) registered to take the exam, which is a higher percentage than the 64.1 percent of students who registered in 2020. This year’s exam will be especially important because it will help to determine which students get admitted into the coveted 23 Indian Institutes of Technology across the country.

This is a significant decrease from 2014 when the registration rate was 83.1 percent. A gradual decline was seen in subsequent years, with rates of 79 percent, 78.6 percent, 77.4 percent, 71.7 percent, and 71.7 percent in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 respectively.

Some experts believe that the reason other engineering colleges are chosen based on the JEE-Mains score is that students are not interested in IITs. They suggest that a student’s JEE-Mains score is not indicative of a lack of interest in the IITs.

“Anonymity is something that a lot of people value, especially when it comes to making decisions that could potentially have a negative consequence. However, when it comes to JEE-Main scores and getting into IIT, being open and honest about where you stand is the best policy. Having a lower score doesn’t mean you won’t get into IIT after Advanced, but it does mean that you have a better chance if you’re open and transparent about your score.”

A senior official from IIT Kanpur stated that many engineering candidates prefer to go to an institute where they can study their desired branch of engineering. This is because the branch of engineering is a very important topic to them.

JNU Will Soon Have A New School For Indian Languages And A Centre For Partition Studies.

jnu

Last week at The Indian Express’s Idea Exchange session, Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) vice-chancellor Santhishree Dhulipudi Pandit said that the university is in the process of setting up a school of Indian studies and a school of Indian languages.

Speaking about the school for Indian languages, Pandit added that it is funded by corpus grants from every state government. So, the central government doesn’t give any money for the school. Every state government institutes its own chair professor and makes the selection. That professor works at JNU. Their salary and everything is looked after from the corpus grant.

Dhanya Pandit, a historian at the University of Mumbai, said she was hopeful that the university would establish a center for the study of the partition of India.

“She added: “We are looking at putting some of our courses online, especially M.A. in Political Science, M.A. in Public Administration, and Business Economics. There is a great demand for the introduction of Korean as an online course. We hope to make money there. Many of the Taiwanese and Korean industries are coming to India. So, if they recruit plumbers, mechanics, they want them to know languages – Korean, Taiwanese Mandarin. So for that certificate course, they are ready to give money to JNU.”

Problem At CUET As Admit Cards Stated Dates That Have Already Passed

The fifth phase of the crucial exam, which is a key component for undergraduate admissions in central universities across the country, started on Sunday.

A lot of students who are taking the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG is saying that the date on their admit cards has already passed. This is different from the date that they were originally told. This is causing problems because the first edition of CUET has been canceled at multiple centers and postponed for several candidates.

However, the rescheduling of the exam for several candidates and attempts to accommodate the choice of city for the exam center has caused some anxiety among students as their admit cards and city intimation slips mention different dates.

The students have been reaching out to the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) requesting another chance to appear in the examination. However, both agencies have been firm in their stance that there will be no re-examination for students who have already appeared for the test.

“I was originally supposed to take my exam on August 30, but it got rescheduled because I’m from Balrampur. But when I went to download my admit card today, the date mentioned was August 17, which has already passed.”

Nikhil R Mishra, an exam taker for the CUET exam in Bihar, was surprised to see his exam date and city had changed on his admit card. The city he was allotted for the exam was five hours away from the one he originally signed up for.

Raunak Patkar from Kanpur was notified by email on August 6th that his exam would be in the second shift. However, up until the day before his exam, he still hadn’t been able to download his admit card and the date given to him originally was different from the day of his exam. If students like Raunak keep worrying about things like this, how will they be able to focus and study for their exams?

The CUET-UG was scheduled to conclude on August 20 but has been pushed back to August 28 due to NTA’s announcement. The exam has been split into six phases and the UGC chairman says this is due to “sabotage” reports from several centers.

First, the Uttar Pradesh government is planning to build an education township in the state. The township will be developed on the idea of ‘Single Entry, Multiple Exit’. The government said the move will provide high-quality education to the youth and equip them with a variety of professional skills in a single place. Besides, it will provide accommodation and many other facilities to both students and teachers.

Yogi had recently directed authorities to prepare a comprehensive action plan for setting up five education townships in the state during a meeting with the representatives of the consultancy firm Deloitte India. The main purpose of the meeting was to explore ways to make Uttar Pradesh a $1 trillion economy.

The Government is hoping to provide better education to the youth by building an education township. This township will offer high-quality education and equip students with multiple professional skills. The township will focus on high-end education, which will cater to students from not only the country but also African, Latin American, and Central Asian countries.

  • The country’s and world’s most revered universities will be able to establish campuses within the township. This will provide students with greater opportunities to get a top-tier education.
  • In this location, there will be Atal Residential Schools, which will serve as both primary and secondary schools.
  • Establishing universities and colleges for undergraduate and postgraduate studies will allow for dedicated research in management, technology, law, and medicine. This will provide the specialized knowledge needed to make well-informed decisions in each field, benefiting both the economy and society as a whole.
  • The education township will also feature skill development universities where training will be imparted to the youth in different types of skills. Besides, many other coaching institutes like Abhyudaya will be started in these education townships so that more and more students can be successful in competitive examinations like NEET, IIT, Union Public Service Commission, etc.
  • Accommodations at the education township will be aplenty for both students and teachers.
  • With the ‘Single Entry, Multiple Exit’ system, students will be able to take out cheap education loans to cover their costs.

The education ministry’s five-year project for technical education will be funded by a World Bank loan. This project, known as TEQIP, will provide funding for engineering education programs across the country.

With the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP) series coming to an end, the union government is now turning its attention to a new project that will enhance technical education in India. The new project will have a focus on equity, resilience and governance, with a special focus on low-income states.

The government has drafted a framework for a new project – Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE). The project is set to run for five years, from 2022-2023 to 2027-28. The draft framework says the project is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP).

The project will be implemented in engineering institutions across the country with a focus on addressing key challenges like lack of infrastructure, resources for research and innovation, female enrollment and more. It will especially focus on undergraduate engineering students from the historically marginalized Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) and vulnerable communities. Elite institutions like Indian Institutions of Technology (IIT) and National Institutes of Technology (NIT) will not be part of the project.

The education ministry intends to establish a monitoring plan for each indicator and outcome in order to collect and analyze data. This will help them track progress and ensure that they are making the necessary changes. The government is yet to disclose the overall funding pattern of this project, but TEQIP III received financial assistance of Rs 2,600 crore.
