Ceramic Engineering is a comparatively new branch of Engineering that deals with the study of the properties, manufacture, design and applications of ceramic materials.
Ceramic ware can be used for both decorative as well as functional purposes. Ceramic products include table and kitchenware, decorative items like flower vase, insulators and potters, building materials like tiles, etc. Cement is also considered a ceramic material.
A ceramic technologist is concerned with study, research and development of the ceramic materials, planning and developing processing systems, designing and construction of plants and machinery along with other engineers, planning and implementation of processing methodologies, designs and development of various applications like glass, porcelain, cement, refractors, insulators, composite materials, enamels, cement etc.
Eligibility Criteria

- 10+2 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Maths and a high percentage of marks is the minimum requirement for admission into the undergraduate program for Ceramic Engineering.
- Entrance exams are conducted at both the national and state level, similar to other branches of engineering.
- M.Tech can be pursued after completion of B.E. or B.Tech or an equivalent qualification.
- One can pursue research after completion of PhD.

Career and Job Prospects

- In the private sector, Ceramic Engineering graduates can be pulled into various ceramic ware manufacturing units located in various parts of India.
- Ceramic designers use sand and clay for basic ceramic materials while the ceramic technologists use materials produced by complex chemical processes.
- You can also start your own business and become an entrepreneur.
- One can also take up jobs in Indian Space Research Organization, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Institute for Plasma Research, etc.
Salary Package
Salary varies with education and experience of the ceramic engineer, the location, and the type of job. A student who has just graduated can earn anywhere between Rs 25,000 and Rs 40,000 per month.
