Humanities Courses in India (BA, MA, PhD)

If you have opted for Humanities or Arts after Class 12, you can further your studies by opting for a Bachelor’s in Arts (BA) and follow it up with a post graduation degree or Master in Arts (MA). You can also complete your research and doctorate degree. Some of the important subjects that you can opt for in Humanities are English, History, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy and Political Science.

Bachelor of Arts (BA)

After completing Class 12 with Arts, you can pursue BA in any subject, provided you have the requisite cut-off marks and scores. Bachelor of Arts is an undergraduate course of three years. You can pursue an undergraduate course or BA in English, BA in History, BA in Geography, BA in Sociology, BA in Journalism and BA in Political Science.

Bachelor of Arts Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must have passed his / her senior secondary examination (12th std) from a recognized board and must have completed 17 years of age. Many of the universities/institutions have a minimum percentage scored at the senior secondary level as an eligibility criterion to appear for their entrance exam. Besides this the candidates are also required to fulfill other eligibility criteria laid by the University / University departments for the admission.

Master of Arts (MA)

Master of Arts is a 2 year post graduation course in any specialized area of Humanities. After completing your BA you can specialise in MA Englsih, MA Geography, MA Archeology, MA History, and MA Sociology.

Master of Arts (MA) Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must have completed Bachelors Degree at the time of admission. He / she should also fulfill the eligibility criteria laid down by the university department in which admission is sought. Many universities have their own written test other than qualifying marks for admission to MA programs.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)

This is a pre doctoral program offered by several universities and institutions. Generally admission to this program is offered on the basis of Entrance exam and Interview.

MPhil Eligibility Criteria

This program is offered to candidates with research aptitude with good academic record. The minimum eligibility criterion for admission into this program is a post Graduate degree in relevant discipline.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is awarded under this program of study. The degree is awarded on the topic over which the candidate carries an exhaustive research and submits his report/finding in the form of a thesis.

Ph D Eligibility Criteria

Most of the institutions/University departments have M.Phil. as an eligibility for admission into this program. National Eligibility Test (NET) is also an eligibility criterion in some institutes for admission in to the PhD programs. Besides the above mentioned parameters candidates may also need to fulfill other eligibility criteria laid by the concerned department.
