Marine Engineering

[read_meter]
marine engineering alt

Marine engineeringĀ deals with the operations, maintenance and repair of all major mechanical and engineering equipment on board a ship. This branch of engineering deals with the natural architecture and science related to ships and is meant for research taken in oceans or any inland waters connected to seas. Marine engineers have the overall responsibility of a ship’s technical management, including the selection of steam turbines, gas turbines and diesel engines for the design of mechanical, electrical, fluid and control system throughout a vessel. This specialized branch incorporates anthropology, engineering, archaeology, sociology and other related studies of human relationships with the sea.

Ā

Marine vessels today are often equipped with updated technology and devices that can be understood, maintained and handled only by marine engineers. Marine engineers are expected to carry a high degree of discipline and responsibility, since these individuals are in charge of a ship and its cargo. They are also responsible to manage the overall cruising of the ship, its complex machinery and support it crossing the water boundaries. The work may take place in cargo, containers and/or oil and gas tankers.

These engineers might also find similar jobs in sectors like hotels, oil companies and offshore power plants, besides jobs in government verticals or the Indian Navy. Marine engineers may also enjoy NRI status with their jobs. The opportunity to see the world through sailing may also be an aspect of this profession.

Topics covered in Marine Engineering

A typical four-yearĀ Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree courseĀ would broadly include subjects like marine management, physics and electronics, computer science, applied mathematics and English. Other topics like ship operation technology and other applied subjects such as maritime commerce, environmental science, and control systems are also usually covered to ensure that you receive enough theoretical and practical exposure in campus workshops and out-campus shipyards. This can help with mental and physical preparation.

Ā

Practicals are generally conducted in subjects such as astronomy, chart work, practical navigation, magnetic and gyro compasses or electronic navigational aids (radar, satellite navigator). Other subjects in a marine engineering course include electronics, fluid mechanics, ship construction, commercial geography, naval architecture and engineering drawing.
