The foundation stone for IIT Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh was laid in March 2015, after the Indian cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a substantial budget for setting up of 6 new IITs between 2015 and 2019.
At present, the temporary campus located on Tirupati-Renigunta Road, has begun to function and offers advanced classrooms, laboratories, computer center, internet connectivity, video conference halls, chat and idea rooms and sports facilities. Other amenities like hostels for boys and girls, dining, recreation, gymnasium, restaurant, bank and post office are also available in the vicinity.
The permanent campus is going to come up at Merlapaka on Yerpedu-Venkatagiri road on 500 acres of land. It is expected to become operative by 2019 and the Andhra Pradesh government has plans to develop major industries in the neighborhood. This should enhance the scope of internships and placements for students, the state government feels.
Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi, the Director of IIT Madras, is acting as the mentor for this newbie IIT. IIT Madras in collaboration with the state government and the Ministry of Human Resource and Development have identified the ideal land for the establishment and functioning of the temporary campus. Their focus was also on the inclusion of all vital infrastructures, expert faculty members and competent administrative staff who could handle the functioning of the institute and the hostel.
The previous experience of mentoring IIT Hyderabad, has readied IIT Madras to lead IIT Tirupati to a successful journey. The new institute is currently offering 4 core branches of study and 120 students, so that each of them can benefit from the adequate attention of the faculty.
The faculty boasts of some professors who are presently engaged with IIT Madras and some others who have recently retired. A couple of them have the experience of being deans and Heads of Departments too, with demonstrated knowledge and expertise both in India and abroad. The permanent faculty will be hired in due course.
For the academic year of 2015 – 2016, 4 streams of B. Tech courses are being offered in Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. A total of 30 seats are allotted for each stream and each course will span across 8 semesters over 4 years. Students will be evaluated on a 10-point grading system with letter grades, for each course. CGPA will be calculated at the end of each semester.
The session for 2015 has already started since August. Details on syllabus, timetable and workshop can be viewed on the institute’s website. It may also interest you to know that the Tirupati Regional Office is collaborating with State Bank of India to arrange for scholar loans. And by 2018, IIT Tirupati will ensure that leading companies approach you for placement.
Under the NSS program, the students of IIT Tirupati visit various government schools on weekends and help in teaching Science, Maths and English classes. They also try to motivate the children with scientific demonstrations, so that they can develop an analytical bent of mind and pursue Science as a career in future too.
