The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) was conducted for the first time on December 5, 2010, by the Bar Council of India. The exam aims to assess a lawyer’s capabilities to practice law in India and intends to set a minimum standard for admission to the practice of law in India, it addresses a candidate’s analytical abilities and basic knowledge of law.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) awards a “Certificate of Practice” to advocates who clear the AIBE. The certificate will be mailed to the advocate’s address within 30 days of the declaration of the AIBE results.
All students graduating from academic year 2009-10 onwards have had to clear the exam to practice law in India. There is no limit to the number of times you can appear for the All India Bar Examination.
In the event of not clearing the All India Bar Examination in the first attempt, you can appear for it the next time and clear it to obtain your Certificate of Practice. You can apply to take the All India Bar Examination only after you have enrolled as an advocate with a State Bar Council. There is no limit on the number of times an advocate can appear for the AIBE.
There are no benefits available for advocates in the SC/ST category who are attempting the All India Bar Examination.

In order to be eligible to appear for AIBE, candidates need to fulfill the following criteria:

The application fee for both first-time (fresh) and repeat candidates is Rs. 2500 (plus Rs.60 SBI bank surcharge.)
1. You can only register online for the 9th AIBE at aibe9.allindiabarexamination.com/registration.aspx
2. After registering, candidates have to log in to their respective accounts.
3. Get a print out of the “bank challan” after logging in to your account.
4. Fill in the bank challan and submit it along with the application fee at the nearest branch of State Bank of India (SBI). It takes approximately 24 hours for a candidate’s registration to be effective, so make payment only a day after registering.
5. Wait to get the payment acknowledgement (it takes approximately 12-24 hours). Then proceed to see your registration details by logging into your registration account.
6. Now click on the “Upload Challan and Details” button and upload your copy of challan (jpg/ jpeg image) that has the bank seal and signature and also update your challan details into your account (journal number, branch code, date of challan)
7. Now click on the “Application Form” button and take a printout of the filled out form (for your own reference.)
