“As torchbearers for climate action, it’s important that we youths raise awareness about the issue within our communities,” says Dr Yannam Deepak, who was selected to participate in a 3-day residential ‘Climate Change and Environment Campaign Managers training’ in Delhi this week. The event, conducted by Youth4Water – a UNICEF Odisha program – aimed to make participants proficient in designing and developing content for social media campaigns.

The programme included creative writing sessions by reputed journalists and exposure visits to various places in the national capital. Through these sessions, youths were trained by experts on UNICEF’s style of content creation, why voices of youth are important and how youths can communicate messages to the masses in simpler language. This opportunity was made possible by Communication Associate Vineeta Misra Chitransi, Director Youth4water Jyoti Sharma, and WASH Specialist Shipra Saxena from UNICEF India, as well as Communication Specialist Radhika Srivastava.

The participants were assigned tasks that included generating ideas to amplify the messaging and designing an effective campaign. The youths came up with innovative ideas to solve problems such as slum sanitation, improving environmental education, and promoting organic farming. To get a better understanding of the challenges in the environment, the youths visited places like Nila Hauz Biodiversity Park and Rajon ki Baoli.

Gowri Sundarajan, Communication Officer from UNICEF, and Vineeta Misra Chitransi trained youths on how to tell stories through various formats, use Canva to design creative content, make posters, small videos or reels, and how photography and videography can be used as tools for presenting stories. The participants were also tasked to design a campaign related to climate action or environment protection and design posts for social media handles which would be uploaded on UNICEF handles.
