IIT Bombay most preferred by top 1000 ranked JEE Students

According to an analysis of choice of colleges by top 1000 ranked students of JEE 2022, IIT Bombay was the most preferred college and was followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur.

IIT Bombay most preferred

IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur have been the top choices for admission among the toppers of JEE from 2016 to 2020 according to an analysis of the exam data of the top 1000 ranked students. However, there has been a change in the fourth and fifth positions. IIT Kharagpur which is also the oldest IIT, the fourth most preferred IIT till 2018 has moved to the fifth place in 2019 and the fourth place is now bagged by IIT Madras.

 

A total of 83 among the top 1000 took admission in IIT Madras and 70 in IIT Kharagpur in 2020. The numbers were 107 and 100 respectively for IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur in 2019.

A total of 188 students of the top 100 opted for IIT Bombay. 168, 98, 83 opted for Dehli, Kanpur and Madra IITs. IIT-Guwahati, IIT-Roorkee and IIT-BHU were sixth, seventh and eighth most preferred among top 1000.


IIT Hyderabad and IIT Indore have been performing better and better since 2016 among these toppers. While IIT Hyderabad went from 19 in 2016 to 34 in 2020, II Indore went from just 3 in 2016 to 14 in 2020.

16,958 IIT seats available across India

A total of 16,958 seats are available for admission across 23 IITs with IIT Bombay offering 1,209, IIT Delhi offering 1,152 seats, IIT Kanpur 964 and IIT Madras 1,054 seats.

NIRF IIT Ranking trends different

Differing from the above trend, the rankings released by National Institutional Ranking Framework of the education ministry places IIT Madras at the top spot followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay.
