Ex IIT Delhi Director explained how non CSE engineering branches can be promoted among students and the reason behind the trend of CSE getting more and more students via his social media post.

Non CSE Branches promotion

Former IIT Delhi Director had earlier in the week posted concerns on social media about non CSE related engineering branches seeing a downward trend among students opting for engineering studies. From the responses he received on the post, he said that the trend was due to more career opportunities in that area. But he also added that it can not be the solution and the solution lies in the creation of time-bound mission mode programmes, careful planning and execution from the top.

He said that many other technologies have come up as means of innovation and wealth creation. Due to the efforts of DST, MeitY and the leadership of Prof. CNR Rao, the knowledge of Nanotechnology has grown and India stands third in the field of Nanotechnology research. However as efforts are hardly made to convert this knowledge to wealth and that there are no job opportunities, education programmes in this sector have lost sheen.

Prof Suggests A 10-year mission mode approach

He said that a 10 year mission mode approach involving all key stakeholders such as academia, industry, and startups should be the key to change this trend. Launching time bound mission mode initiatives (AI, Quantum, IoT, Sensors, Semiconductors) requires planning on educational research and innovation fronts and this would be the way for job creation and making educational programmes attractive to students.

He added that the mission should start with building a research base and involving industry experts and allied ministries from the beginning. Involving Indian Origin scientists from across the world would be a value addition.

Educational Programme Reform Needed

The ex IIT director also added that the educational system needed reforms and planning from the beginning about how many graduates the country needs at a certain point of time at different levels. He also highlighted the need for teachers’ training, creation of special manpower and internship opportunities.
