IIT Madras is offering a 12 week free online course on robotics to students on the NPTEL platform. Learn about eligibility, course structure, how to apply and other details of the course here.
IIT Madras is offering a 12 week free online course to students on the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPEL) platform. The course is based on robotics and is named “Introduction to Robotics.” The objective of this course is to provide a basic understanding of robotics to students from various disciplines.The course covers the mechanical, electrical, and computer science aspects of robotics.
Eligibility and how to apply for the free course
The course would be most beneficial to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Interested students can apply for the course on the website of NPTEL.
Course structure
| Week 1 | Introduction to robotics- History, growth; Robot applications- Manufacturing industry, defense, rehabilitation, medical etc., Laws of Robotics |
| Week 2 | Robot mechanisms; Kinematics- coordinate transformations, DH parameters |
| Week 3 | Forward Kinematics and Inverse Kinematics |
| Week 4 | Jacobians, Statics, Trajectory Planning |
| Week 5 | Actuators (electrical)- DC motors, BLDC servo motors |
| Week 6 | Sensors, sensor integration |
| Week 7 | Control PWM, joint motion control, feedback control |
| Week 8 | Computed torque control |
| Week 9 | Perception, localisation and mapping |
| Week 10 | Probabilistic robotics, Path planning, BFS; DFS; Dijkstra; A-star; D-star; Voronoi; Potential Field; Hybrid approaches |
| Week 11 | Simultaneous Localization and Mapping |
| Week 12 | Introduction to Reinforcement Learning |
Instructor and Certificate
Professor Balaraman Ravindran, a professor of computer science at IIT Madras and a Mindtree Faculty Fellow, Professor Asokan T, a professor in the department of engineering design at IIT Madras, and Dr. Krishna Vasudevan, a professor in the department of electrical engineering at IIT Madras, are the instructors for this 12-week course.
To get the completion certificate for this 12 week robotics course, students need to give a proctored exam at any of the designated study centers. The fee for exams is Rs. 1000 and the date is October 30, 2022 (morning session from 9 am to 12 noon and afternoon session from 2 pm to 5 pm).
