MBBS NExT Exam : A group of 30 MBBS students from the 2019 batch have filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking exemption from the National Exit Test (NExT). The students have argued that they are not prepared to write the NExT exam and that the previous rules that were in force in 2019 should be applied to them. They have also sought the cancellation of the mock/practice test of the NExT exam, which is scheduled to be conducted on July 28.

Confirming this decision, NMC in a public notice stated, “All the stakeholders are hereby informed that the National Exit Test (NExT) examination is deferred on the advice of the Ministry, dated 11.07.2023, till further directions from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.”

The petition has been filed at a time when the NMC has deferred the NExT examination for an indefinite period of time. The NMC had earlier announced that the NExT exam would be conducted for the 2019 batch, but this decision was met with opposition from students and doctors. They argued that conducting the NExT exam for the 2019 batch would be a violation of the NMC Act, 2019.

The Union Health Minister has also said that there will be no NExT Exam for the 2019 MBBS Batch and the exam will not replace the final MBBS examinations. However, there is still no clarity regarding the future of the NExT examination.

The petition filed by the MBBS students is likely to be heard by the Supreme Court soon. The court will have to decide whether to grant the students exemption from the NExT exam and whether to cancel the mock/practice test.
