MoE: Over 34,000 colleges, 690 universities have no NAAC accreditation

MoE: Education Ministry during the Lok Sabha proceedings informed the house that over 695 universities and 34,000 colleges are operating across the country without NAAC accreditation. The parliament on Monday was informed about the data received from UGC about the universities and colleges being operated without accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Subhas Sarkar, the Union Minister of State for Education, provided the information in response to a written query in the Lok Sabha. “According to information received from the UGC, NAAC has accredited 418 universities and 9,062 colleges out of the 1,113 universities and 43,796 colleges,” he said. “NAAC has significantly lowered the fee structure for assessment and accreditation in order to bring all educational institutions, universities, and colleges under the accreditation system.

The metrics and questions in the manual for affiliated and constituent colleges’ self-study reports have also been significantly reduced, Sarkar continued. 34,734 colleges are currently in operation without NAAC accreditation, he claimed. All higher education institutions are expected to strive to achieve the following through their institutional development plans, according to the new National Education Policy (NEP).

According to the new National Education Policy (NEP), all institutions of higher learning are expected to work toward receiving the highest level of accreditation over the next 15 years.

Universities and institutions (UGC) are accredited by the NAAC, an Inter-University Center of the University Grants Commission.

According to the UGC, NAAC has significantly lowered the assessment and accreditation fee structure in order to bring all educational institutions under the accreditation system. The metrics or questions in the manual for the affiliated or constituent colleges’ self-study report have also been greatly diminished.
