UPSC Mains 2022: The exam conducting body, Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), started the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2022 on September 16, 2022. UPSC, on Sep 16, conducted the Essay paper which had a wide variety of topics, unlike last year.

Check here a detailed analysis of UPSC Mains exam Paper 1 ‘Essay’ shared by some of the experts.

This year, for the first time, the essays were based on metaphors and were difficult to understand.

In terms of essay pattern, this year the pattern was the same as last year. For instance: In Section B, all essays were based on metaphors, and in Section A, the essay topics included essays on History. Environment and Geography.

  • The three topics of the essays were quite simple and based on popular quotations. The meaning of these quotations was easy to comprehend.
  • The last two essay topics were difficult to comprehend. The 7th essay topic- ‘A smile is the chosen vehicle for all ambiguities’, was the most difficult one.
  • There was ample scope for using quotations and examples from History, Geography, and contemporary issues to enhance the quality of essays and make them interesting.
  • Hence, this year, the best scorer of the essay paper would not be those who have a deeper understanding of ethics and philosophy, but those who possess good writing and expression skills.
