What is EU and Numerus Clausus?

European Union zone – Universities in Germany are open to accept education leaving certificates from EU zone countries that is Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway. Students coming from outside the EU zone have to qualify the higher education entrance exam requirement. If in case one does not qualify their requirements in entrance in higher education, students have to attend the preparatory course (Studienkolleg) in order to be eligible for admission in the universities of Germany.

Numerus Clausus (NC) – Even if a student has met the higher education requirements, he/she may not be eligible if they have failed to score the minimum GPA in their prior education. Numerus Clausus is basically limited admission that is directed to some of the popular courses in Germany. Since many international and local students opt for degree programs in Germany, the NC is applied at universities to limit and manage the overcrowding at universities. In conclusion, better the GPA score better the opportunity to get accepted by the admission committee.

When should I start applying for the universities?

It might not be possible to be aware of all the universities in Germany but knowing the best and top universities that offer your desired program is important. After learning and listing down the universities you are willing to enrol in, gather knowledge about its entry requirements and the deadline to send out the application. Application deadlines are several months before the semester officially begins, therefore submitting your complete application sooner is extremely advantageous.

Note: Winter applications deadline is end of May to July 15th

Summer applications deadline is beginning of December to January 15th.

Although, it is recommended that students should check the specific university website, as the deadline data may differ.

What documents are required to apply in German universities?

Depending on the degree program and universities, the requirements may differ. We’ve listed down the most basic and primary documents that are required while applying in Germany:

Students can upload and submit their university application online i.e. through the centralized system. The Germany based university website accepts universities applications and documents. However, one must remember the application deadline and should submit the application at least a few weeks before the deadline.
