Studying Engineering in Germany

Image Alt

Two types of higher education institutions teach engineering in Germany– Universitaeten, or research universities and the more recent Fachhochschulen, or universities of applied sciences. However, Fachhochschulen offers Diploma program but no doctoral program and teaches specific applications of engineering. Universitaeten also awards a Diploma program as well as doctorates and have a more theoretical approach to engineering. Earning a degree from an universitaeten takes six to seven years while earning a diploma in Fachhochschulen takes four or five years.

Additionally, there are automation technology institutes which are more or less like trade schools and can be found in Bremen, Bochum, Berlin, Cologne, Chemnitz, Dresden, Darmstadt, Freiberg, Magdeburg, Stuttgart, Rostock, Ilmenau, Merseburg, Halle, Wernigerode, Mittweida, Flensburg, Karlsruhe, Siegen, and Braunschweig.

Why study Engineering in Germany?

Germany, a hub for budding engineers

Germany is almost synonymous with engineering and it is one of the few countries in the world to earn the reputation of having produced some of the best engineers in the world. German engineering is a brand on its own and in fact many Indian engineering students wish to have their resumes with a German internship background.

World’s trusted site for Engineering

German engineers are in great demand in the world over because of the intensive practical training that they receive in colleges as compared to the US and other European countries. Technical universities and the more recent Universities of Applied Sciences lay stress on practical and job oriented programs rather than theory-based knowledge.
