Indian Air Force Aeronautical Engineering Exams

In Indian Air Force Aeronautical Engineering is divided into two branches – Mechanical and Electrical. Aeronautical Engineers in the Mechanical Branch are responsible for aircraft and its weapon system. They are concerned with the operational readiness of aircraft.

Aeronautical Engineers in the Electronic Branch maintain most sophisticated electronic networks of communications from ground to air and vice versa. Engineers also install, maintain, operate defence radar systems, other electronic gadgets, sophisticated computers, maintain and operate other ground defence electronics equipments.

IAF Aeronautical Engineering Exams Eligibility Criteria

Age: 18 to 28 years
Marital Status: Single
Nationality: Indian
Gender: This is applicable to both men and women.

Educational Qualification: First Division High on merit of valid GATE scores of 70% and above in following subjects:-

 * BE/ B tech (Electronics)/Telecommunication / Electrical / Electrical / Electrical Communication / Electronics    Communication / Instrumentation / Computer Science and Engineering or a combination of these subjects.
 * Diploma in Electronics of Madras Institute of Technology.
 * B Tech in Radio Physics and Electronics/Optics and Opt Electronics/Optics and Opto Electronics.
 * Section A & B Examination of the Associate membership examination of the Institute of Engineers (India) in  Electrical, Electronics of Tele Communication subjects.
 * Graduate membership examination of the Institute of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineers with subjects of section A and full subjects of section B by actual studies (Maths, Applied Electronics and Circuits, Principles of Communication Engineering transmission lines and networks.)
 * Section A and B of examination of Aeronautical society of India by actual studies in Avionics/Communication streams.
 * MCA with Maths, Physics and Electronic at graduation level & M Sc Tech in Electronics and Radio Engineering.
 * M Sc Degree in Physics (with Electronics), Electronics computer Science, Computer Application.

Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical)

Age: 18 to 28 years
Marital Status: Single
Nationality: Indian
Gender: This is applicable to both men and women.

Educational Qualification: You should have a First Division High on merit or valid GATE score of 70% and above in the following-

 

* BE/B Tech in Aeronautical/Mechanical/Production/Industrial production or a combination of these subjects.
* Section A and B of associate membership examination of Institution of Engineering (India) with Mechanical/Aeronautical subjects by actual studies.
* Section A and B of associate membership examination of the Aeronautical society of India with Group I(Design and Production) or Group II(Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) subjects by actual studies.

IAF Aeronautical Engineering Admission Procedure

The selection procedure remains same and uniform standards are applicable for all. The processes are like this:

• Written Examination
• Physical Fitness Test
• Interview
• Conduct of Medical Examination
• Preparing All India Select List
• Undertaking Enrollment

Written Examination: Candidate will first be tested in English. Those who qualify in English will be tested in Mathematics and Physics.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT):  After having successfully cleared Step 2, candidate will be required to undergo PFT consisting of 1.6 Km run to be completed in a maximum of eight minutes. Candidates who complete the PFT in 7 min 30 sec or less will be awarded additional marks.

Interview: Candidates who qualify in PFT will be interviewed. Candidates recommended in the interview will only be considered for medical exam.

Conduct of Medical Examination: After the interview process selected candidate will be sent for a medical examination, which shall be conducted by a Medical Officer of the Armed Forces. (When you report for the medical exam, you must ensure a high level of personal hygiene and bring the latest prescription and spectacles for corrected vision to avoid delay). After medical examination, the candidates are either declared ‘Fit’ of ‘Unfit’ or ‘Temporarily Medically Unfit’ (TMU).

Preparing Select List: On successfully clearing the examination, the candidate’s name will feature in the All India Select List. This list will be displayed at the Airmen Selection Centers, where the test were conducted and is also displayed on the website. A call letter will be sent, requesting the candidate to report to the Airmen Selection Center for enrollment.

Undertaking Enrollment: After the candidate has completed his enrollment formalities, he will be routed to Airmen Training School, Sambra (Belgaum) for 26 weeks of Joint Basic Phase Training (JBPT). Towards the end of this basic combatant training, he will undergo a Trade Aptitude Test (TAT).

Depending upon candidate’s qualification, performance in JBPT and TAT as also candidate’s physical/medical standards, then the candidate will be assigned a trade. Thereafter they will a send the candidate to one of the Training Institutes for specialization in the trade the candidate assigned.

If the candidate has successfully cleared Step 1, he will receive a call letter to report to any one of the Air Force Selection Boards located at Dehradun, Varanasi and Mysore. At the Air Force Selection Boards, the candidate will undergo a number of psychological tests, an interview and group activities, which are collectively called the ‘Officer Like Qualities’ (OLQ) Tests. These tests are designed to gauge the candidate’s potential and suitability as an officer in the Armed Forces.

The following is the schedule for OLQ Tests:

• Psychological Tests
• Group Tests
• Group Tests
• Interview
• Conference

The Psychological Tests are written tests that are conducted by a Psychologist. The Group Tests are interactive indoor and outdoor tests. They expect active physical participation from the candidate.The Interview involves a personal conversation with the Indian Air force’s Interviewing Officer.

At the conference held on the last day, all the assessors, i.e. the Psychologist, Ground Testing Officer and the Interviewing Officer, discuss your performance. Based on your performance, you will be selected for the next step.

All of the above are screening tests. If you do not make the passing grades, you are routed back home the same day.
If the candidate is found suitable in all the above tests , he would be asked to return home and await a call for a medical examination depending upon your position in the merit list.
