Admission Procedure For Indian Students in German University

If you’re a student from India looking to pursue postgraduate courses from Germany, you ought to know that all universities in Germany are autonomous i.e. every university has its own set of rules and eligibility criteria for admitting students. We will be chronicling, in this article, the general admission process for getting a seat in a German university, but it is advisable that you also cross-check the website of every university you’re interested in, to find out the detailed procedure.
PG Course Structure in Germany

If you are looking at pursuing post graduate courses in Germany, you will in all probability start your course in the month of October, which is when the winter intake at German universities start. While PG courses are divided into winter and summer semesters, most courses start their intake process in the winter term.
There are two types of German universities that offer PG courses: TU or Universities of Technology (which are research institutes and offer doctorate degrees), and FH/Fachhochschulen or Universities of Applied Sciences (which offer more career-aligned courses like engineering, business administration, etc, and do not offer doctorate degrees).
All international programs offered by German universities are taught in English, and designed for international students. There are programs taught in German, too but these require a high level of proficiency in German.
Eligibility criteria for admission to Masters degree (PG) in Germany
- You should have completed your graduation from India.
- Generally, the 4 year bachelors courses of India are considered equivalent to the German bachelors degree.
- If your UG course was for 3 years, then you must check about your eligibility with the university before you apply.
- In order to pursue courses like Economics, Law you might be required to furnish a GMAT score. Some universities may also ask for GRE or IELTS or TOEFL scores.
- In case your course will be taught in German, you might need to also clear exams like TestDaF.
Applicants have to send their application either to the chosen university or to “UNI-ASSIST”. UNI-ASSIST is a body that accepts your application, screens it and shares it with member universities of your choice. Universities that are part of UNI-ASSIST generally don’t accept direct applications from candidates. The application process to apply to German Universities is detailed below.
Eligibility criteria for admission to a Doctorate program in Germany
Admission to a doctorate (Ph.D.) at the best research universities in Germany require:
- A university degree (diploma/ magister/ masters) with above-average results (2.5+ or grade “good”)
- Good written and spoken English skills that allow you to speak fluently with your supervisor about your research work during the application interview.
- Doctoral applicants from India must subject their Masters degree to an equivalency test with a German degree. The Dean’s office of your chosen university will be doing this check.
Application Process to Apply to German Universities
 The application process for PG courses in German universities is pretty standard and the same as the application process for undergraduate courses. These are the steps you need to follow.
- Check your eligibility
- Apply for the requisite tests
- Ensure that your documents including transcripts, statements of purpose, recommendation letters, test scores, etc., are in order
- Check if the university is a member of Uni-Assist and continue with the application process accordingly
Once your admission is secure start your visa processing, and also ensure that you have proofs of fund for the first year of study.
