IIT’s Lesson: Computer Science isn’t the only field with opportunities or scope.

IIT's Lesson: Computer Science isn't the only field with opportunities or scope.

Former IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao writes: Most IIT aspirants want to pursue computer science. They want to major in computer science and get a job right out of college. This mindset is stifling innovation and stifling talent for research programs.

IIT Lesson's

Many decisions made by engineering students these days are influenced by FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) rather than technical considerations. The majority of IIT aspirants want to take the same path. They want to study computer science at a specific institute and get a specific job right after BTech. This mindset is stifling innovation and stifling talent for research programs. The sooner our youth overcome their FOMO fears and gain the confidence to make their own decisions, the better for the country and for themselves.

IndiaEducation Counselling

First and foremost, I want to emphasize that computer science is not the only field with opportunities. Consider the field of biotechnology. India has made significant advances in biotechnology and vaccine production. Biotechnology holds enormous promise for start-ups and innovation, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic. Even though there is a global emphasis on biotechnology and pharmacy, our students do not see the value in pursuing bioengineering and biotechnology.

The semiconductor mission that India has launched will require specialists in a variety of fields. Semiconductor processing involves a lot of chemistry. Mechanical and chemical engineers are in charge of creating semiconductor manufacturing tools. Electronics and related disciplines are central to the semiconductor ecosystem.

Aside from that, quantum technology is entirely based on physics. The future of computing will be in the quantum domain, which will necessitate a thorough understanding of physics. Similarly, all micro-electromechanical sensors in smartphones are mechanical devices. The Internet-of-Things domain will necessitate expertise from nearly every branch of engineering. The next frontier is aerospace engineering and space technologies. In these industries, there will be tremendous opportunities for innovation. There will soon be private space companies competing with ISRO.

Nanotechnology has begun to have an impact on industries ranging from textiles to healthcare. To feed 1.3 billion people with nutritious food, agriculture and food technologies must be extremely innovative. Surprisingly, even today, these sectors are not as appealing to our future engineers as computer science. This obsession with CSE is robbing other fields of talent and, ultimately, innovation potential. Our over 100 Unicorns in India today are all in the e-commerce and Fintech space and can be classified as business model innovations at best.

JEE Main 2023: The Education Ministry has revised the eligibility criteria for admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs.

JEE Main 2023: The Education Ministry has revised the eligibility criteria for admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs.

Following a meeting in the ministry on Monday, NTA agreed to add an additional criterion that would allow students who scored in the top 20% of their board exam to also apply for admission based on their JEE Main score.

JEE Mains 2023

JEE Main 2023: In a relief to students aspiring to appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, the Ministry of Education (MoE) on Tuesday decided that apart from the eligibility criteria of scoring 75 percent and above in the class 12 exam, students from the top 20 percentile of all boards will be eligible to seek admission based on their JEE Main score.

As the JEE Advanced already has the same criterion, this part-relaxation will also allow students to compete for seats across NIT.

According to the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) JEE Main information brochure, in addition to the candidate’s All India Rank (AIR) in the national entrance test for engineering admissions, aspirants must also score 75 percent or higher in class 12 to be eligible for admission. The qualifying aggregate score for SC/ST candidates was declared to be 65% or higher.

Previously, the same criterion was used, but it was suspended for three years due to the Covid pandemic. This was due to a lack of consistency in evaluation practices undertaken by various boards – both state and national – as a result of the pandemic conditions. The original eligibility criteria were reinstated with the restoration of normalcy in the board exam evaluation.

However, this sparked opposition from prospective candidates and their parents. Many people took to Twitter to demand that the exam be postponed and that this criterion be removed. A petition was filed in the Bombay High Court to postpone the JEE-Main; the petition also requested that the 75 percent eligibility criterion be relaxed.

IndiaEducation Counselling

The MoE eventually intervened after receiving representations for the same, The Indian Express has learned. Following the requests, an additional eligibility criterion was added following a meeting on Tuesday. It was decided to include the 20-percentile criteria to ensure that those who do not score 75% or higher do not miss out on the opportunity to sit for the exam and then participate in the admission process.

Aside from their AIR in JEE Main, a student should have either scored 75% or higher in their class 12 board exam or be among the top 20% of candidates in the respective board exam result, according to the revised eligibility criteria.

The JEE Main registration period ends on January 12. The first session of the national-level entrance test is scheduled between January 24-31.

IIT Placements: Why are Amazon, Google, Meta, and Twitter not hiring from IITs?

Companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have either not recruited or have provided a small pool of offers to most IITs; experts attribute this to a shift in focus away from software and a delay in processing international applications.

IIT Placements

In the midst of global layoffs, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have seen a decrease in offers from American tech behemoths such as Amazon, Meta, Twitter, and Google during the 2022-23 placement season.

Only three of the 45 international offers recorded in IIT-Kharagpur so far have come from US-based companies. (File)

IIT Lifestyle: A world full of opportunities

IIT Lifestyle: A world full of opportunities

A third-year BTech student at IIT Guwahati describes what it’s like to be an IITian and how being a part of the institution has helped him develop and learn things outside of the classroom.

IIT lifestyle

IIT: I became interested in engineering because I have a knack for solving problems, and I made the decision to attend IIT during first grade. I’m Himanshu Mittal, a third-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati studying biosciences and bioengineering.

I was admitted, and because of COVID-19, classes were delivered online. We first visited the college in March 2021, and because of the second wave of the pandemic, we had to come back within a month. I have heard about the lovely green campus of IIT Guwahati since I was a young child and have always wanted to live in a hostel. I never stopped asking God to put an end to the pandemic so I could enjoy my time at IIT.

College clubs bring out the best in you

During all of these years, I experimented with marketing, consulting, analytics, data science, photography, cooking, videography, cinematography, music, and dance. The leadership encourages and highlights our talent. The anchoring club, of which I am a member, sponsors numerous events and podcasts. I had the opportunity to host a podcast with well-known people like Dr. Sonal Mansingh and Nikhil D’Souza.

The largest techno-management festival in the entire Northeast, Techniche, was hosted by me. Additionally, as the festival’s marketing coordinator, it was my job to approach businesses and secure sponsorship for the event.

Healthy competition

Every field at IIT has a healthy level of competition. Even when we’re feeling down, our friends lift our spirits, and we constantly keep inspiring each other. Everyone is constantly striving to improve themselves. The academic staff is beneficial. The majority of them are engaged in research activities, and if any student has an interest in doing the same, the professors greatly assist them and also secure recommendations for them.

To name the hostels, each IIT follows a particular pattern. It is founded at IIT-G on bodies of water like rivers and tributaries. In the past, almost everyone had a single room, including me, but starting this year, our juniors are given double-sharing rooms. There are about 11 hostels, and there are two that are just for girls. One of them has wings for both boys and girls. Despite the hostel having single rooms, we are constantly hanging out and having fun in each other’s rooms. Food that is prepared at home never belongs to just one person; rather, it belongs to everyone. That’s one of the best things about staying in a hostel—everything is shared, including food and happy and sad moments.

Exams are fun

Nobody actually sleeps during exam season. It’s a very structured environment, whether it’s for group or individual study. Although there is some pressure, I believe it is necessary. You don’t have to worry, but you should be aware of how important the exams are.

Students not only pay attention to and put extra effort into our specific subjects, but also their areas of interest. In addition to studying for my BTech course, I work on projects and improve my skills because I am interested in management and business. Our clubs also support us. Additionally, during placements, we are free to interview with the businesses we want that are unrelated to our major. For instance, during my internship and projects, I was able to interview with businesses that weren’t necessarily based in the fields of biosciences and bioengineering. based on the skill set I have developed through these clubs and the various projects I have worked on over the years.

Be friends with your seniors

Before enrolling, I had some reservations about ragging. But once I started college, all of my concerns disappeared. The elderly are welcoming and very helpful. I encountered no problems because of the college’s extremely strict anti-ragging policy. My senior class members taught me a lot, and even after they graduate, they continue to stay in touch with us and support us in any way they can.

Even if you speak with a senior from an earlier batch, IITs have the best alumni networks, and they will be so friendly to you. As a member of the Student Alumni Interaction Linkage (SAIL), I keep in touch with a large number of them. Between current batches and alumni, SAIL organizes sessions and interactions. The alumni take the time to talk to us, are humble, and are always willing to help despite living successful lives and achieving great things. Many of them also come here to apply for jobs.

All in all, my time at IIT has been rewarding and has advanced me in every way.
