IELTS Listening Test: How to Improve your IELTS Listening Skills

IELTS Listening Test

IELTS Listening Test: How to Improve your IELTS Listening Skills

The IELTS Listening test will require you to use your excellent listening skills that you already have in your own language. By doing so, you will be able to improve your listening comprehension for the IELTS Listening test.

IELTS Listening Test

In this post, we will look at some easy activities to help you hone four essential listening skills – each one important for doing well on the IELTS Listening test. The great thing is that you already use these skills every day in real life when speaking your own language(s). There are four crucial listening skills for success: ‘anticipation’, ‘active, targeted listening’, ‘thinking/preparing’, and ‘noticing’. Let’s take a closer look at all four of these skills:

  • Anticipation

In the IELTS Listening test, you have 30 seconds before each of the four parts of the test to look at the questions before the audio starts. Use this time to anticipate/predict topics that might arise and the type of information you need to answer the question. In addition, you have a further 20-30 seconds in the middle of Parts 1, 2, and 3 to review your answers and make changes if necessary.

  •  Active, targeted listening

Many questions in both Parts 1 and 2 will require numeric responses such as dates, prices, phone numbers, and zip codes. In order to properly understand and respond to these questions, it’s important to become familiar with the rhythm of how numbers are read aloud in English.

This way, you can more easily catch on to the numbers being said in an audio clip. To practice this, try listening to a 5-minute news broadcast and writing down all of the numbers you hear (along with what they refer to).

  • Thinking/preparing

Part 3 of the exam includes a conversation between 2 and 4 people in an educational context. For example, two students may be discussing a project or research, or a student and a tutor may be discussing the student’s work. Because different people will have different questions to ask and different information to give depending on their role, it’s important to actively think about an individual’s role while looking at the questions. This will help you prepare for which speaker to listen to for different questions.

  • Noticing

Part 4 of the IELTS test involves listening to an academic monologue, such as a lecture. These lectures don’t require any specialist knowledge, but they can be dense and information-rich. That’s why it’s essential to practice picking out as many “clues” to the direction and flow of the speech as possible.

Here’s a tip: use test transcripts to look for the cohesive devices that signpost the organization of the lecture. Then try categorizing the different functions. This will help you understand how lectures are typically organized and what you should be listening to when you take the test.

Jaipur student reports a critical bug in Instagram

Instagram has rewarded a Jaipur student with Rs 38 lakh for finding a bug and saving millions of Instagram accounts from being hacked. Sharma reported a bug that let users change the thumbnail of their Instagram Reels from any account without entering their login and password.

The bug made Instagram accounts vulnerable to hackers who could have issued the thumbnail feature without even using the login credentials. Luckily, Sharma’s discovery prevented any major damage from occurring, and we’re grateful that he took the time to report the issue.

Sharma alerted Meta of the bug on Instagram and Facebook back in January after he experienced some problems with his own Instagram account. The company acknowledged the issue and asked him to provide a demo of the same. He later proved his report by showing a 5 minute demo in which he changed the thumbnail of a Reel without the account credentials.

After conducting a thorough investigation, Facebook approved his report on May 11 and awarded him with a reward of $45,000, which translates to Rs 38 lakh. Facebook also offered $4500, i.e. Rs 3.6 lakh, for delaying the reward by four months.

"There was a bug in Facebook's Instagram, through which the thumbnail of the reel could have been changed from any account. All it required was the media ID of the account to change it, no matter how strong the password of the account holder is. In December last year, I started finding fault with my Instagram account. After a lot of hard work, on the morning of January 31, I came to know about the (bug) mistake on Instagram. After this, I sent a report to Facebook about this mistake on Instagram at night and received a reply from them after three days. It asked me to share a demo," - Jaipur Student

Meta is running a Meta Bug Bounty program to encourage programmers to find and report security vulnerabilities in Meta technologies and programs. “We recognise and reward security researchers who help us to keep people safe by reporting vulnerabilities in our products and services. Monetary bounties for such reports are entirely at Meta’s discretion, based on risk, impact, the number of vulnerable users, and other factors,” Meta’s bug bounty programme policy reads.

Punjab government promises strict action against leaked videos from Chandigarh University.

Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has requested Chandigarh university students to remain calm amidst the recent protests and has assured that no accused party will be spared.

Chandigarh University

On Saturday night, a Chandigarh University student in Mohali caused a massive protest after allegedly leaking private videos of 60 hostel mates online. The accused is said to have recorded videos of hostel girls without their knowledge or consent and sent them to a boy in Shimla.

The boy then circulated the videos on social media, leading to the girl’s arrest. A case has been registered against her under Section 354C (Viewing and/or capturing the image of a girl or woman going about her private acts when she is unaware) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and IT Act.

Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains requested Chandigarh University students to maintain calm amid the massive protest. Assuring strict action, Bains called the matter very sensitive as it is related to the dignity of women and claimed that the accused will not be spared at any cost. The minister said an inquiry has been set up and strict action will be taken against those found guilty.

Taking to Twitter, the Punjab Education Minister said, “I humbly request all the students of Chandigarh University to remain calm, no one guilty will be spared. It’s a very sensitive matter and relates to the dignity of our sisters and daughters. We all including the media should be very very cautious, it is also a test of ours now as a society”.

BJP Leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa was greatly upset after hearing about the incident and has thus requested that the Punjab government and Chandigarh University administration take severe action against the individuals responsible.

"Deeply pained to see the News of 8 girls from Chandigarh University committing suicide after their bathing video went viral. Apparently, their female friend made MMS of 60 girls in her hostel and sent it to her BF who leaked those videos. My heart goes out to innocent girls & their parents. Chandigarh University needs to take some stern action in this regard. Education Institutions cannot afford to fail in the eyes of our daughters!".

He has also asked for the videos to be removed from all digital platforms. “It’s appalling that this woman would do such a disgraceful thing as recording it. Let’s stand together as a society to support these girls.”, he continued.

CUET 2022: CBSE achieves over 16k hundredth percentile scores

The NTA announced the results of the CUET-UG 2022 on Friday, with 21,159 hundredth percentile scores recorded in over 60 subjects. This number represents multiple hundredth percentile scores being counted separately, even if attained by the same student.

CUET 2022

According to the data compiled by the National Testing Agency (NTA), students from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) made up 79.3% of the total 100 percentile scorers in at least one subject in the Common University Entrance Test for undergraduate admissions (CUET-UG) this year.

The NTA announced the results for CUET-UG 2022 on Friday, with 21,159 hundredth percentile scores recorded in over 60 subjects. The number represents multiple hundredth percentile scores being counted separately, even if attained by the same student.

According to NTA, of the 21,159 total scores, 16,771 were achieved by students from the CBSE board. This was followed by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) with 1049 scores, the State Board of High School and Intermediate Education in Uttar Pradesh with 906 scores, and the Bihar School Examination Board with 286 scores. Students from the Tamil Nadu State Board of School Examinations received 252 hundredth percentile scores.

To be sure, officials aware of the matter said that around 80% of the candidates who took the CUET were also from CBSE, though the exact number was not immediately available.

“The vast majority of students who took the exam were from the CBSE board, and as a result, the vast majority of top-scoring students were also from the CBSE board,” said a senior NTA official, who wished to remain anonymous.

Sudha Acharya, chairperson of the National Progressive School Conference (NPSC) – which represents more than 120 Delhi schools – said many educators and students were of the view that the CUET-UG failed to achieve its purpose, an argument she said was supported by the fact that CBSE students dominated the hundredth percentile count.

Out of the 21,159 top-scoring students in various subjects, most of them scored high in English (8,236), followed by political science (2,065), business studies (1,669), biology (1,324) and economics (1,188).

Humanities students outperformed their science counterparts when it came to receiving high scores. In mathematics, only 82 students were in the top percentile, while in physics, this number was 59 and in chemistry, 156.

Can’t give accommodation to Ukraine's returned medical students in Indian colleges: Center to the supreme court

The Center has said that it can’t accommodate medical students who have returned from Ukraine in the Indian universities.

news featured image 1 4 1

Indian medical students who have returned from studying in Ukraine may soon face difficulties continuing their education in India. According to the Center’s response to the Supreme Court, there is no provision under the law to allow admissions to such students in Indian colleges.

In the response, the Center has submitted that no permission has been given by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to accommodate any such Ukraine-returned Indian medical students in the colleges in the country. The reasons have primarily been attributed to a lack of provisions under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and/or the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.

“It is humbly submitted that so far as such students are concerned, there are no such provisions either under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 or the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 as well as the Regulations to accommodate or transfer medical students from any foreign medical institutes/colleges to Indian medical colleges,” the government said.

The Central government has said in an affidavit that the students who opt to study abroad do so for two reasons – poor merit in NEET and affordability. The government said that if they allow poor merit students into premier Indian medical colleges, this may lead to other legal actions from the candidates who could not get seats in these colleges.

The government said that the Ukraine-returned students wouldn’t be able to afford the fee structure in Indian colleges.

The affidavit said, “It is humbly submitted that in case these students with poor merit are allowed admission in premier medical colleges in India by default, there may be several litigations from those desirous candidates who could not get seats in these colleges and have taken admission in either lesser known colleges or have been deprived of a seat in medical colleges.”
