Roll back NEP, reinstate scholarships, urge AIFRTE

A demonstration was conducted here on Tuesday by the All India Forum for Right to Education (AIFRTE), a group of academics, teachers, and students from diverse organisations calling for publicly funded, equitable, and free education for all.

The group questioned the recent rules that allowed foreign colleges to open campuses in India, claiming that these changes would now allow for the repatriation of earnings and the collection of fees without restriction or upper limits. The platform stated: “Although on the one hand, we are witnessing rapid fee increases and the promotion of self-financed courses, on the other hand, there has been a major downward trend in funding for numerous scholarship programmes catering to SC/ST, OBC, minority, and disabled students.

They demanded that the National Education Policy of 2020 (NEP) be repealed, arguing that it violated the idea of education for all. They said that the NEP was being foisted on the populace as an executive decision and that it had not been discussed in Parliament or State Assemblies.

The organisation proposed that funding for higher education institutions exclusively come from grants rather than loans, which increase institutional and individual debt. They also called for the promotion of market-oriented self-financing courses. It requested that the Central Universities discontinue using the Common University Entrance Exam (CUET) as a means of undergraduate programme entrance. Standardization has favoured CBSE students over those from other State boards, as evidenced by the Delhi University intake of 97% CBSE students this year and a significant decrease in admissions of female students, the platform claimed.

NEP 2020 drawbacks

In order to rescind the NEP 2020, the letter cited events including the closing and merging of public schools, the defunding of higher education institutions, the discontinuation of scholarship programmes in K–12 and higher education, and significant fee increases. The letter also discussed the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) draught policy, which would let international colleges to establish campuses in India with 100% restitution of earnings and no maximum limit, and how it would create a barrier to accessing a quality education in India. “On the one hand, there has been a tremendous decreasing trend in financing for numerous scholarship programmes catering to SC/ST, OBC, minority, and international students over the past several years, and we are seeing a rapid increase in tuition costs and the promotion of self-financed courses.

All schools in the state of Telangana are required to operate with shortened hours till the end of the current academic year. The decree states that half-day classes will start today, March 15, and go until April 24.

All schools in Telangana have been given shorter hours of operation, apparently in anticipation of the impending summer, when temperatures in Hyderabad have already reached 36 to 38 degrees Celsius.                                                                        Regional joint directors and district educational officials were told to adopt half-day lessons in a circular from the director of school education. Telangana’s new school day would run from 8 am to 12:30 pm, with lunch being served at 12:30.

Nonetheless, special lessons for kids in the tenth standard will reportedly continue due to their preparation for the SSC. The students’ tests will be in the month of April, and the schools serving as SSC centres will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

For the purpose of preparing Class X pupils for the SSC Public Examination in April 2023, “Special lessons shall continue. The hours of operation for schools with SSC Examination Centers are from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM “the directive states, according to a reputable news source

“All Regional Joint, Directors of School Education, and District Educational Officers in the state are thus instructed to disseminate the foregoing directions to the schools operating under all managements and supervise the execution,” it said.”

According to the Ministry of Education, Bihar has the lowest literacy percentage in the nation, followed by Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. According to the report, 84.11 percent of Indians live in cities, whereas 67.77 percent of Indians in rural areas are literate. In answer to a written question in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Education Annapurna Devi provided the facts.

According to the Reports.Bihar (61.8%) has the lowest literacy rate in the country, followed by Arunachal Pradesh (65.3%) and Rajasthan (66.1%), according to the Ministry of Education. Kerala has the highest literacy rate (94%), followed by Lakshadweep (91.85%) and Mizoram (91.33%), the ministry added. The literacy rate in rural India is 67.77%, compared to 84.11% in urban India, it further said.

Reason why Bihar is lacking in education sector

The absence of colleges and institutions in Bihar is the primary factor driving thousands of students out of the state each year. In the whole nation, Rajasthan has the most universities, 83 of which also operate colleges. The top 10 states for higher education do not include Bihar in any way. Parallel to this, Uttar Pradesh has the most colleges in the nation, 7,078 of which are for higher education. Bihar is not among the top 10 states in this instance either, despite having the third-largest population in the nation.

Similarly, Bihar has no name among the finest higher educational institutions for medicine in the country. Due to this, Bihari students are compelled to travel to Kota, Delhi, and other places .cities due to the lack of attention paid to education during the past 20–30 years. Simply said, Bihar’s future should be a major political issue because of the state of its educational system.

The Samagra Shiksha Scheme : A step towards reducing literacy rate gaps in India

The Samagra Shiksha Program intends to improve learning levels from preschool to senior secondary levels while ensuring universal access to and retention in education. It also strives to address gender and socioeconomic category disparities.

The Samagra Shiksha Scheme is a scheme that the federal government supports the states and union territories in putting into action.

A federally funded programme known as Saakshar Bharat was put into place in rural regions in 404 districts in 26 states and one union territory where, according to the Census of 2001, the female literacy rate was at or below 50% in order to increase adult literacy rates.

By the end of the XII five year plan, the programme planned to increase the nation’s overall literacy rate to 80% and eliminate the gender disparity to 10% points, according to Devi. The schedule was extended to March 31, 2018.

According to the minister, 7.64 crore students who completed the National Institute of Open Schooling’s (NIOS) biennial Basic Literacy Assessment Tests between August 2010 and March 2016 exceeded the final aim, which was to literate 7.00 crore adult illiterates.

A year before the start of their course, students who want to study in the US may now be able to apply for a visa. For Indian students, who have been waiting as long as 300 days at some centers, the announcement is a welcome relief.  This Monday, the US Bureau of Consular Affairs stated that student visas in the F and M categories can now be given up to 365 days before the start of the student’s academic term. According to a tweet from the agency, “F and M student visas can now be issued up to 365 days in advance of the I-20 program start date, enabling additional time for students to apply for a visa.”

US Taking Measures

  • 120 days in advance, students who have been accepted to a US university can schedule their visa interviews.
  • John Ballard, the consular chief at the US Consulate General in Mumbai, predicts that the US embassy and consulates will issue a record number of visas to Indian students this year.

  • The US is implementing several strategies to clear the backlog of visa appointments. The US said earlier this month that some Indian visa applications will now be able to request appointments abroad.
  • Also, the embassy intends to organize special interviews for first-time applicants and expand its consular staff.

After many Iranian schoolgirls experienced a strange wave of headaches, nausea, vomiting, and respiratory problems. A senior health official has now suggested that the youngsters may have been poisoned on purpose as some extremists wanted to shut down schools.

Students in the holy city of Qom, located south of the capital Tehran, were the first to report a wave of widespread ailments. Girls from nearby cities then became ill as well. According to Iran’s deputy health minister, they were poisoned with “chemical substances.”

Numerous of the girls were treated in hospitals after becoming ill. This would have required them to miss class, which is exactly what some extremists desire. According to reports in the local media, religious fanatics seeking to stop females from attending school may be responsible for this.

The spate of poisonings.

The first case was reported by a school team in November. On February 22, news of the most recent occurrence came from Qom. Hospitalized were 15 schoolgirls. The neighbourhood media reports that they are now stable and being watched.

The deputy governor of Lorestan, Majid Monemi, reported on Sunday that 50 female pupils at a high school in Borujerd, western Iran, had once more been poisoned.18 girls were hospitalized in Qom in November.Since then, hundreds more youngsters have fallen ill and reported having similar symptoms in the nation’s gender-separated public institutions.Iran’s clergy are located in the very conservative and devout city of Qom, which is where the first poisoning was originally recorded.

To prevent girls from school.

It first starts getting attention when the deputy health minister admitted to foul play According to the semi-official news agency Fars, Panahi told reporters on Sunday that “some persons sought the shutdown of all institutions, especially girls’ schools.”

The state news agency, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), cited Panahi as saying, “Following the poisoning of several kids in Qom schools, it was found that some people wanted all schools, especially girls’ schools, to be shuttered.”

Mohammad Javad Montazeri, Iran’s senior prosecutor, suggested that the occurrences might have been planned. The “worrying wave of some form of poisoning” at the city’s schools, he claimed in a letter to the state prosecutor in Qom, suggests “the likelihood of intentional criminal conduct.”

It was strange, according to Nafiseh Moradi, an Islamic studies researcher at Tehran’s Al Zahra University, which is an all-female public university, that girls rather than boys were most impacted by the ailments.

Since December, just one boys’ school has reported cases of poisoning.

Parents protest

Parents of the sick girls confronted school officials and staff members in a furious manner. In Qam, parents gathered on February 14th outside the governorate to “demand an answer.”

Families are now paralyzed by fear, and many girls are skipping school. Many schools in Qam were “unofficially” closed, according to the reformist publication Shargh daily. Online learning has been demanded by some.

Only 50 of the 250 kids in our school showed up for class, according to a teacher in Qom who wished to remain anonymous.

A probe ordered

Medical professionals reportedly performed toxicological testing but were unable to identify the illness’s root cause. Blood samples from sick students have not revealed any bacterial or viral illnesses.

As several children have reported smelling something weird in their classrooms, they have not ruled out the idea that a deadly gas may have been the origin of the illnesses, according to RFE/RL.

The intelligence and education ministries are attempting to determine what is causing the poisonings, according to government spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi. According to AFP, Prosecutor General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri initiated a legal investigation into the incidents last week.

Yet so far, no one has been taken into custody.
