The number of Advanced Placement courses is surging at JC Schools, and more students than before are passing their AP exams, Superintendent Bryan McGraw said.

AP courses are college-level courses taught in high schools. Students in the class can take an end-of-year exam that can earn them college credit for the class, scored on a scale of 1-5.

McGraw has overseen a concerted effort to increase AP offerings in the Jefferson City School District and increase student participation. His goal as a new superintendent has been to create a “District of Champions,” which includes academic success and college readiness.

“I think when you look at our strategic plan, we want to have kids career- and college-ready, and this is a way of getting them college-ready,” he said.

Currently, JCHS offers Pre-AP World History and English I for freshmen and English 2 for sophomores. In total, 900 students are enrolled in AP classes between both high schools. That means about 35 percent of students are currently taking at least one AP course, though many take more than one.

Assam Govt Increases Medical Seats for Communities Demanding ST Status
IndiaEducation Counselling

The Assam Cabinet has decided to increase the number of reserved seats by two each for the six communities demanding Scheduled Tribe status in medical education from the academic year 2022-23.

The six communities – Tea garden tribes, Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Matak, Moran and Chutia – which are currently under the Other Backward Communities (OBC) have seats reserved for students from these communities in the MBBS, Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said at a media briefing after the cabinet meeting late on Friday night.

The decision was taken in order to provide better opportunities for these communities to pursue medical education. The additional seats will help ensure that more students from these communities will be able to study medicine and go on to become doctors. This is a positive step towards ensuring that all communities have an equal opportunity to pursue medical education and achieve their dreams.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, also decided to increase the upper age limit at entry level posts in medical colleges from 38 to 40 years for general category applicants, 41 to 43 years for OBC applicants and More Other Backward Class (MOBC) applicants, and 43 to 45 years for SC/ST category applicants. The decision was made in an effort to motivate PG doctors to offer their services as faculty in the medical colleges.

The cabinet has decided to make the process of laying the City Gas Distribution Pipeline (CGDP) more efficient by allowing the Deputy Commissioners to give permission for right of way within 15 days, instead of the current 30 days, from when a detailed plan is submitted.

IndiaEducation Counselling

Professor PP Kundu of the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Roorkee has developed a solution to an urgent problem facing every person in society: the government of India has banned the use of certain types of polybags as of July 2022 because they are non-biodegradable and considered a big hazard to the environment. Kundu’s solution is a thermoplastic starch that can be blended with LDPE, making LDPE biodegradable.

India, being an agricultural country, produces a lot of starch. This includes potato, rice, wheat, maise, or corn starch. Professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Director of IIT Roorkee, said that the newly developed technology is expected to have great value because of the large quantities of starch produced in India and because it is environmentally friendly.

The technology for manufacturing biodegradable polybags has been transferred from IIT Roorkee to Noida-based Agrasar Innovative LLP. Agrasar will use this technology to manufacture biodegradable polybags on a large scale.

The most common plasticisers used are polyfunctional alcohols, such as glycerol and sorbitol, and some low molecular weight compounds that can form intermolecular hydrogen bonds, like water and formamide.

When starch and the plasticiser are heated and constantly agitated, they undergo gelatinisation. This process reduces the starch’s crystallinity enough to create an amorphous structure. Because it is amorphous, it can be blended with LDPE.
