Computer Science and its applications are fast becoming one of the most sought after courses both at undergraduate and post-graduate level in India.

A number of renowned universities and colleges in India offer computer science courses at an undergraduate and post-graduate level.

The trend is further rising owing to the rapid growth of IT and software industries in the country. A career in Computer Science has been proved lucrative and rewarding since last decade.

An individual, who studies computer science at undergraduate or postgraduate level not only learns the software (language and programming etc) aspect of the computer but also learns the knowledge of operating system, programming language, data base etc.

Eligibility Criteria

Degree programs offered in Computer science include undergraduates courses like B.Sc and BCA. One can pursue a pass course or an honors program in Computer Science in addition to other conventional science subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Maths.

Those who complete BSc in Computer Science can continue postgraduate program i.e. M.Sc Computer Science. One having a simple science degree can pursue Master of Computer Application program which is the best choice for aspirants of computer Science.

Apart from this basic eligibility criterion as a graduation, institutes also fix other criteria for selecting candidates for a particular course. For MCA program entrance examination is generally conducted by the respective institute/university or the state.

Note: Please note that MCA and M.Sc – Computer Science are equivalent degrees as recognized by UGC. Similarly BCA and B.Sc – Computer Science are equivalent degrees at undergraduate level.

Career Scope & Job Prospects

There are bright career prospects for computer science professionals or software professionals in recent scenario. With the opening of huge software and IT companies in India, the job opportunities for trained professionals have increased considerably. India is known to be a leader in software and IT sector.

Computer science graduates and MCA pass outs find job opportunities in a variety of environments in academia, research, industry, government, private, business organizations and so on.

They are involved in analyzing problems for solutions, formulating and testing, using advanced communications or multi-media equipment, or working in teams for product development.

The software and IT companies are the major employers of computer science graduates. They offer the best packages to the young graduates which are unmatched with other branches of science.

Salary Package

There has been significant development in software sector in last few years which has opened the door of new opportunities for young computer engineers. The salary of computer science professionals depends on the type of employer – public or private.

Generally private firms offer excellent salary as compared to government departments. Working experience, qualifications, ability are important factors in determining the pay level.

In India, a fresh pass-out from an average engineering college can expect starting monthly salary somewhere between Rs.8000 – Rs.25,000.
 
With 1-2 years of industrial experience, the salary may go up to Rs. 50,000 per month and even more or beyond expectations. MCA pass outs from reputed universities/colleges are offered annual pay package up to 10 lakh or more.
