While arriving at a conclusion over what stream to choose, students are faced with dilemmas regarding what stream is better than the other, what stream will be easier to pursue and score in, what stream would enable them to achieve their dreams and aspirations, what stream will allow them to have a profession that would give them monetary as well as job satisfaction, and similar doubts.

A simple answer to the above questions is that no stream, whether it is Science, Commerce or Humanities, is better or worse than the other. Approaching this important decision with these questions in mind is wrong and more often than not, a student would end up choosing the wrong stream for themselves.

What if I chose the wrong stream?

Sometimes, a student may face a situation where they realize after a certain period of time that they have chosen the wrong stream for themselves. If the realization is made early enough, that is, during the first few months of Class 11 itself, it can be easy for the student to change their stream.

However, if the student realizes that the stream they have chosen is not right for them after they have completed Class 11, switching streams may prove to be difficult.

Switching between the three streams, namely Science, Commerce and Humanities, depends on which stream the student is switching from and to which stream

If a student wishes to change from the Science stream to the Commerce stream, it will be comparatively easier than switching from the Commerce stream to the Science stream. Also, students who have taken the Humanities stream in Class 11 will not be able to transition well to the Science stream.

Students pursuing the Commerce or Science stream will almost always find the transition from their stream to the humanities stream comfortable and easy.

A comparative analysis of the three streams are given in the box below:

Commerce

Students interested in numbers and accounts should opt for commerce

Can shift to arts after Class 11

Can immediately start a professional career like CA or CS

Research is not a common career path and therefore not desirable for students who want to stay with academics

Science

Students interested in numbers and logical reasoning should opt for science stream

Can shift to both arts and commerce streams after class 11

Cannot start a professional career like engineering or medical but can definitely appear for entrance exams

Scientific research is encouraged even by the government and India has some of the best research institutes

Humanities

Interested in creative and social environment

Have to stick to humanities after class 11

Usually a must to complete graduation before starting a professional career like journalist, psychologist

Students with a academic orientation should opt for Humanities as there is ample scope of research in all subjects especially in history, sociology, and psychology
