If you love gadgets and electronics and you’re enthusiastic and eager to be involved in product development, you may opt for a career in this field after a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Electronics. Basic qualities like proficiency in science, technology, communication skills, problem-solving and decision-making skills are important in this profession. The ability to work in a team is helpful, as well as managerial skills, coordination and motivational skills. Being able to make plans and oversee that goals are achieved is another beneficial trait. So what do electronics engineers do? They research, design and develop electronic components and equipment in industries like telecommunications (mobile phones, radio, satellite communications and TV), manufacturing (programmable logic controls and industrial machinery) and data communication (laptops, ATM machines, PDAs). They might also work on medical instruments, clinical and laboratory apparatus; military communication, navigation systems, transport (vehicle electronics systems, tracking devices) or domestic appliances.

Topics covered in Electronics Engineering

Usually a four-year course split into eight semesters, the first two semesters in electronics engineering in India are sometimes combined.

  • The first semester tends to cover subjects like English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, basic engineering, computer literacy and engineering graphics.
  • The subjects taken in the second semester might include mathematics, material science, biology for engineers, principles of environmental science, basic engineering, electrical circuits, and engineering graphics.
  • In the third semester, students usually have subjects such as mathematics, electrical engineering, electromagnetic theory and wave guides, electronic devices, digital systems and signals and systems.
  • The fourth semester could cover subjects like probability and random processes, electronic circuits, linear integrated circuits, transmission lines and networks, communication theory, and digital signal processing.
  • In the fifth semester, students may take subjects like engineering economics and management, electronic measurements and instrumentation, control systems, antenna and wave propagation, digital communication, and microprocessors and micro-controllers.
  • The subject content for the sixth semester generally includes microwave and RF design, optical communication and networks, Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) devices and design and an elective. The options may be neural network and fuzzy logic, operations research or information theory and coding.
  • The subjects in the seventh semester could include computer communication and wireless communication, besides electives like spread spectrum techniques, radar and navigational aids, data structures and algorithms.
  • The final semester may include subjects like scripting language and web technology, network security, digital image processing, embedded systems, electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility, communication switching techniques and mobile computing.
