The education in Intellectual Property Law has never been a part of teaching curricula of Indian Education System. In the post TRIPS regime education and research is shifting towards Intellectual Property creation in the hubs of science and technology research. Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law came into existence year 2006 and offers diploma and degree programmes in Intellectual Property Law. The courses are run on self financing basis.

Programmes

The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law is meant for conducting teaching programmes and research in Intellectual Property Law. At present the school offers the following two programmes-

    • Six-Semester, Three-Year Full-Time residential LL.B. Programme leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Law with specialization in Intellectual Property Rights, at par with the LL.B. Degree requirements of the Bar Council of India. 
    • Three-Semester, One and a Half Year Post-Graduate Part-Time non-residential Diploma Programme leading to a Diploma in Intellectual Property Law, to be conducted from Kharagpur and the Extension Centre at Kolkata.

Curriculum

The course curricula of the programmes offered at Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL) have been prepared on the basis of the following- 

    • Requirement of Bar Council of India- This is necessary for the 3-year LL.B. Programme in order for people completing the Programme being eligible for practicing in the court of law in the Union of India.
    • Requirement of the Indian Patent Office- This is required for people completing the 3-year degree Programme as well as the 1½ -year diploma Programme in order for them to be able to practice/participate in the Indian Patent Office work.
    • By examining and drawing from the law programmes and specialized courses of universities in US, Australia, Singapore, UK etc. and in particular, The George Washington University Law School, US.
    • Continuous dialogue and participation of World Intellectual Property Organization and its Worldwide Academy at Geneva.

Eligibility

A- [For 3-year LL.B. Degree in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)] 

First Class Bachelors Degree in Engineering/Technology/Medicine or equivalent.
or
First Class Masters Degree in Science or Pharmacy
or
MBA with Science and Engineering background.

B- [For 1½ -year Diploma Programme in Intellectual Property Law (IPL)]

First Class Bachelors Degree in Engineering/Technology/Medicine or equivalent.
or
First Class Masters Degree in Science or Pharmacy.
or
MBA with Science and Engineering background.
or
3 years LLB course recognized by the Bar Council of India with 60% marks. 

Admission

An ALL INDIA ENTRANCE TEST EXAMINATION is conducted at Kharagpur and other designated centers.
Candidates in the merit list of the entrance examination are called for interview at Kharagpur and other centers.
Those qualifying the Group Discussion / Interview are finally enrolled for the course.

The application form for entrance examination can be obtained from Vinod Gupta School of Management IIT Kharagpur on submitting the requisite amount of fee. The institute publishes notification for the sale of application form in the beginning of academic year.

    • Last Date for receipt of completed application Form at RGSOIPL office : Last Week of April
    • Date of Entrance Exam : Third week of May
    • Declaration of Result : First week of July
    • Commencement of Classes : Third Week of July
