Colleges with proven job placement

India has become a global player in areas such as information technology and pharmaceuticals, with leading companies seeking out the best and brightest college students for employment. But as a college student, how do you match your personal interests to the right career field? How do you select a course that leads to the best job opportunities? And, most importantly, how do you get connected with today’s hottest employers?

Job placement programmes

The core focus of job placement programmes is to help students find employment in their field of academic study. Typically led by a faculty member, these programmes provide guidance, career counseling and a range of professional development activities, such as building interview skills, writing a curriculum vitae, arranging pre-placement talks, hosting group discussions and more.

Despite India’s economic slowdown, job placement programmes continue to successfully match college students with eager employers. The latest recruitment data reveals that Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and Hans Raj College were two of the most successful colleges for student placements in 2011-2012. According to the Economic Times, SRCC placed 160 students during the first six months of 2012. Hans Raj College placed 75 students, with up to another 30 in the process of getting final job offers.

5 leading job placement programmes

  1. Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC):
The Placement Cell was founded in 1996 and has a solid track record of getting students jobs through on-campus interviews. Students can connect with the corporate world through summer projects, live projects and on-campus visits by company recruiters. Some top recruiters include Deloitte, Google, GE Capital, Grant Thornton, Taj Hotels and Progeon.

  2. Hans Raj College:
The Placement Cell works closely with students and employers alike to ensure the right students are connected with the right companies. The cell recently organized a business seminar in tandem with Ernst & Young as well as a corporate workshop with KPMG to offer students a feel of the corporate world. In 2011, the top on-campus recruiter was Ernst & Young, recruiting 50 students for various positions within the company.

  3. Jesus and Mary College:
The college has a Placement Cell led by a coordinator who works hand-in-hand with employers to arrange both interviews and final placements of students. In 2010-2011, the top five recruiters included Ernst & Young, Genpact, JP Commodities, Oberoi Hotel and Jaypee Capitals.

  4. Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi:
Kirori Mal’s placement program has a longstanding tradition of securing positions for its students with companies that include Google, McKinsey, Taj Group, Wipro Technologies and ABN Amro.

  5. St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University:
A highly competitive university (only 400 out of 28,000 students who submit applications are admitted), St. Stephen’s College has an active Campus Placement Cell (CPC). Managed by students, the CPC handles all placement activities, including arranging tests, collecting CVs, interviews, group discussions and more. The college has not revealed its latest placement numbers; however, over 25 companies visited the campus during the 2010-2011 placement season.

Other successful colleges include Miranda HouseLady Sri Ram and Gargi, with approximately 30 to 40% of students being placed with employers. Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics told the Economic Times it had placed 40 students during the most recent recruiting season. Recruiters included Ernst & Young and Google India.

With the increasing competitiveness of India’s businesses, optimistic economic projections and one of the world’s youngest populations, the future seems bright for India’s college students. However, those who take advantage of placement cells and connect with companies early may have a serious edge.
