Request For Audio Notes By Students For Visually Impaired Students

With schools and colleges shut down due to lockdown, visually-challenged students in the State are understandably worried. They don’t have audiobooks for all subjects or alternative study materials like braille texts. The State Government has paid little attention to the educational needs of visually-challenged students. Though the Government has decided to start online education for Class X students through the Diksha application after April 14, no such initiatives have been taken up at the college level.

A visually impaired student at the Open University recently expressed their frustration at being studying for their exams in a language they cannot understand. The student, who asked to remain anonymous, said that they were given study materials in English instead of Odia, even though they had specifically chosen to study in their native language.

They added that the university does not have any audio materials for their subject of history, making it even more difficult to get through the material. It’s a shame that this student is facing these challenges – we hope that the university can find a way to better support them in their studies.

Sruti Mohapatra, an activist, suggested that students of different departments should come forward and record audiobooks of all the books available of Plus II, Plus III, and PG, which can then be uploaded on the website of the Higher Education department. The reason for this is that people charge Rs 1000 for recording small texts and there are several practical problems; as a result, we don’t use laptops to a great extent. Most students depend on audio recordings of class lectures, and now that everyone is at home, this would be a great way to give back to the community.

Reading scores saw their largest decrease in 30 years

A new federal study has revealed that math and reading scores have decreased significantly in the past two years for America’s 9-year-olds, providing insight into the large-scale learning challenges faced by children across the nation. The pandemic has had a profound effect on children’s education, and this data offers a sobering look at the progress that still needs to be made in order to get kids back on track.

In a recent study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics – a part of the U.S. Department of Education – it was revealed that reading scores had decreased more in the last 30 years than at any other point in history, while math scores had decreased for the first time since the testing began.

The nation’s standardized testing provides data that gives an initial look at how pandemic learning disruptions have impacted students across the country. The findings released Thursday are just a small snapshot of what is to come, as Broader data is expected to be released later this year as part of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the Nation’s Report Card.

The study reflects the educational challenges that American students have faced over the past two years as schools have been forced to shut down for months at a time due to Covid-19 outbreaks. Many students have spent a year or more learning from home, and virus outbreaks among staff and students have continued the disruption even after kids have returned to the classroom.

THE SHILLONG TIMES Since 1945 Upgrading Higher Education

The recent decision of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to engage experts and professionals from various fields as professors of practice is a step in the right direction. The objective, as per the draft, is “to develop courses and curriculum to meet the industry and societal needs and enable HEIs (higher education institutions) to work with industry experts on joint research projects and consultancy services which will be mutually beneficial”. This will help universities keep up with the latest industry trends and produce graduates that are more employable.

The initiative’s goal is to bring in experts from a diverse range of fields, such as engineering, science, technology, entrepreneurship, commerce, social sciences media, civil services, public administration, and armed forces. These experts will help develop and design course curricula, deliver lectures, mentor students in innovation and entrepreneurship, focus on industry-academia collaboration, carry out joint research projects, and hold seminars in collaboration with regular faculty members.

Statistics show that the number of universities has grown from approximately 20 in 1950 to over 1,000 currently. However, only 135 of these are considered Institutions of National Importance. Close to 39 million students are enrolled in academic institutions with India’s GER (gross enrolment ratio) at just over 27%. To implement Education 4.0, upgrades in quality are necessary.

Some experts believe that the latest NEP Policy for education visualises a future where education is in perfect sync with the politics of the corporate Hindutva alliance that currently rules India. The policy strongly believes in the privatization of education, which will make it more expensive and out of reach for those who are socioeconomically deprived. This also means that quality education, which the rich and middle class can afford, will not be available to the lower echelons of society.

It would be unfortunate if only the privileged section of society acquires the education needed to fill executive and official positions, while those excluded from such opportunities are left to compete for a limited number of jobs among the vast workforce. In fact, leaders must educate themselves so they can empower the young generation – this is something that is urgently needed.

IIT Delhi Justice Chandrachud Talked About Making Difference Matter in Higher Education

Judge DY Chandrachud of the Supreme Court has stated that the decriminalisation of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code by the apex court has given rise to queer people as legally empowered citizens. He went on to say that whilst the judgment has enabled them to demand their rights, rightfully and proudly, there is still a need for structural changes to guarantee positive legal outcomes for marginalized queer people, who still suffer from intersecting forms of oppression.

Justice Chandrachud spoke at IIT-Delhi on Tuesday about how “certain groups of queer people, due to their caste and class positions, are more susceptible and vulnerable to the abuse of the law – both in terms of symbolic and material harm”. He went on to say that this issue needs to be addressed in higher education.

Today is a special day as we celebrate the 4th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s judgement in Navtej Singh Johar. The decriminalisation of Section 377 has enabled queer people to emerge as legally empowered citizens and demand their rights, but there are still structural changes needed to ensure that all queer people can benefit from these positive legal effects. We must continue to fight for the rights of all queer people, especially those who are marginalized and face intersecting oppressions.

Justice Chandrachud recalled that one of the connected petitions named Anwesh Pokkuluri versus Union of India, comprised of a spirited chorus of about 20 students and alumni from various IITs across the country, including IIT-Delhi, representing ‘Pravritti’, a support group for LGBT members of the IIT fraternity. He said that the petitioners have made an extraordinary contribution to the spread of awareness about gender and sexuality issues within the IIT community.

“The youngest petitioner before the Court was a mere 19-year-old student of IIT-Delhi. By taking a stand and speaking up before the Court in the Section 377 litigation, not only did students and alumni of IITs help contribute to building a modern, contemporary India, but they also helped to bring the country closer to her constitutional values”, he said.

AAP Requests BJP Leader to School to Confirm Promise of 'Education'. What Happens Next Is Going Viral

The BJP’s allegation of a ‘school scam’ involving inflated costs for school reconstruction was the cause behind the fight.

Covid Breaking News For Facebook Post 1

Amidst weeks of verbal and virtual duels between the AAP and BJP on several issues, rival leaders from the opposing parties fought on camera outside schools in Delhi on Wednesday. Both the AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj and the BJP’s Gaurav Bhatia tweeted videos of their versions of the brawl.

The BJP’s allegation of a “school scam” involving inflated costs for school reconstruction was the cause behind the fight including an accusation that the AAP government ‘falsely promised’ 500 new schools in Delhi, which were never built.

BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia was at a school today on the invitation of AAP Saurabh Bharadwaj when the two sparred. He had challenged the AAP government to take him to a “single school” built by the party. But according to the AAP spokesperson, who shared his video, the BJP leader refused to enter the school and “ran away.” “We told him there are 498 schools, please let us see them,” Bharadwaj wrote.

However, the BJP leader continued with his argument. “He (the AAP leader) took us to a 1966 school. We’ve arrived at an unfinished second school. After eight and a half years, this is the reality. Thank you for revealing the truth, ” Bhatia said in the video as Bharadwaj continued to contradict him.

The AAP and the BJP have been at odds for weeks, ever since the CBI raided Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on corruption allegations in the AAP government’s liquor policy. Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP’s leader, and Delhi Chief Minister accused the center of hounding his ministers out of resentment over praise for his government’s work in health and education.

Assam CM Sarma had also engaged in a Twitter spat with the leader and the argument began after Kejriwal had tweeted that the closure of schools is not a solution and there is a need to open more schools across the country, and shared a link to a news report claiming a “closure” of some schools in Assam.

“You came to power with the promise of making Delhi like London and Paris, don’t you remember @ArvindKejriwal Ji? When he could not do anything, he started comparing #Delhi with the small towns of Assam and Northeast! Believe me, if the BJP gets a city and resources like Delhi, the party will make it the most prosperous city in the world,” the Assam CM had said in a tweet in Hindi.
