According to the 2016-17 rankings it ranks 81st in the world and houses over 40,000 students and has six campuses with eight faculties. Founded in 1883, Auckland is now the country’s largest university with 38,500 students, and nearly 10,000 of whom graduate annually. The main campus is in Auckland city and there are four other specialist campuses.

Located in Dunedin, University of Otago offers courses in sciences, arts, health sciences and business and teaches over 20,000 students. Established in 1869, University of Otago was the first university to be established in New Zealand. It is a research-intensive university known for some of the best researchers of the region. One of the youngest universities in New Zealand, it houses over 35,000 students and even offers distance learning option for higher studies.
University of Massey has grown from a small agricultural college in Palmerston North to become one of the largest residential universities in New Zealand. Massey is now spread over three campuses and is the only one to offer veterinary science programmes and Bachelor of Aviation degree.

Established in 1990, the University is known for its courses in Agriculture and Agribusiness. Lincoln University which began as a School of Agriculture is now the third oldest university in New Zealand. Victoria College was founded in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and hence named after her. It soon showed positive growth and student numbers rose from 254 in 1905 to over 700 in 1923, with three additions made to the building over this period.Â

Auckland Technical University was started in Rutland Street with a little more than 130 students and it was only in 1906 that a day technical institution was opened under the name of Auckland Technical College. It soon showed upward growth and nine departments were established in 1973.Â
