1. University of Auckland

According to the 2016-17 rankings it ranks 81st in the world and houses over 40,000 students and has six campuses with eight faculties. Founded in 1883, Auckland is now the country’s largest university with 38,500 students, and nearly 10,000 of whom graduate annually. The main campus is in Auckland city and there are four other specialist campuses.

2. University of Canterbury

This is the second oldest institute of higher education in New Zealand and offers a wide variety of courses in many fields like humanities, social work, engineering, forestry etc.

The following criteria should be met by Indian students seeking admission in various undergraduate courses in the University of Canterbury.

3. University of Otago

Located in Dunedin, University of Otago offers courses in sciences, arts, health sciences and business and teaches over 20,000 students. Established in 1869, University of Otago was the first university to be established in New Zealand. It is a research-intensive university known for some of the best researchers of the region. Otago has a higher proportion of PhD students than any other university in New Zealand. This of course does not mean that undergraduate study is neglected in the University. The University is equally well known for quality teaching in undergraduate courses.

4. Massey University

One of the youngest universities in New Zealand, it houses over 35,000 students and even offers distance learning option for higher studies.

University of Massey has grown from a small agricultural college in Palmerston North to become one of the largest residential universities in New Zealand. Massey is now spread over three campuses and is the only one to offer veterinary science programmes and Bachelor of Aviation degree.

Undergraduate Entry Requirements for Indian Students
Higher Secondary School Examinations or All-India Senior School Certificate with 75% in each of 4 academic subjects and 65% in English.

Postgraduate entry requirements

  • An appropriate undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institution.

Doctorate Degrees (PhD)

  • A Bachelor’s plus a Master’s degree, or a Bachelor with Honours equivalent to four years of study and attainment at First Class or 2:1 level, from a recognised tertiary institution.

5. Lincoln University

Established in 1990, the University is known for its courses in Agriculture and Agribusiness. Lincoln University which began as a School of Agriculture is now the third oldest university in New Zealand. The University gives a lot of importance to research as is established by the fact that it is home to the Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit (AERU), the Centre for Advanced Computational Solutions (CfACS), the Tourism, Recreation Research and Education Centre (TRREC), the Centre for Soil and Environmental Quality and the Isaac Centre for Nature Conservation.

6. University of Waikato

Formed in 1964, the university has two campuses-one in Hamilton and a satellite campus in Tauranga.
University of Waikato which had a humble beginning, now has a student population of 13,000, out of which 4800 become a graduate annually. University of Waikato offers world-class education and research facilities to the students.

7. Victoria University of Wellington

Victoria College was founded in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and hence named after her. It soon showed positive growth and student numbers rose from 254 in 1905 to over 700 in 1923, with three additions made to the building over this period. 

The university has 9 faculties with over twenty thousand students. It offers some of the best courses in law, arts and sciences. Quality teaching and research at the University is largely due to the intervention of Professors like ‘Tommy’ Hunter, J. C. Beaglehole and George von Zedlitz.

8. Auckland University of Technology

Auckland Technical University was started in Rutland Street with a little more than 130 students and it was only in 1906 that a day technical institution was opened under the name of Auckland Technical College. It soon showed upward growth and nine departments were established in 1973. 

AUT offers a wide range of UG and PG courses through its five faculties – Te Ara Poutama, Design & Creative Technologies, Health & Environmental Sciences, Business & Law and Culture & Society.

The polytechnic division, Auckland Technical Institute, becomes New Zealand’s first polytechnic to become a university in the year 2000 and was renamed Auckland University of Technology.
