As of July 26, the Australian government has made an announcement through the official website of Australia’s Department of Home Affairs — immi.homeaffairs.gov.au — stating that “TOEFL iBT will no longer be accepted as an English language test for Australian visa purposes until further notice.” Despite its previous acceptance, the TOEFL iBT score will no longer be considered for visa applications starting from the mentioned date.

Currently, Australia acknowledges scores from the following English language tests taken at secure test centers for visa requirements:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which includes One Skill Retake (OSR)*
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE)
  • Cambridge English (CAE) (also known as C1 Advanced)
  • Occupational English Test (OET), specifically designed for health professionals

It is essential for applicants to bear in mind that, for Australian visa purposes, IELTS test results with OSR will be accepted, except for applications for subclasses 476, 482, and 485, which require scores from a single sitting or attempt.

Furthermore, certain test takers are eligible for IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR). As per the official notification, OSR enables test takers to retake one of the four test components, namely reading, writing, speaking, or listening, once only.

Indian Languages as a Medium of Instruction allowed by CBSE

This is a major step towards promoting multilingual education in India and giving students the opportunity to learn in their mother tongue.

Currently, most CBSE affiliated schools use English as the medium of instruction and some schools Hindi. However, the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) advocates the use of home language, mother tongue, local language, or regional language as the medium of instruction.

The NEP 2020 also states that the medium of instruction at the primary stage should be the child’s mother tongue or the local language. In line with this, the CBSE has directed the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) to prepare new textbooks in 22 scheduled Indian languages. These textbooks will be available from the 2024-25 academic session.

The NEP 2020 is completing three years this month. To mark the occasion, the government is expected to announce the new school curriculum.

In an academic circular to its schools on Friday, the CBSE stated that multilingual education is a valuable approach to fostering linguistic diversity, cultural understanding, and academic success among students. The board also stated that CBSE affiliated schools may consider using Indian languages as the medium of instruction from pre-primary to Class 12, in addition to other existing options.

QS Best City for Students Ranking 2024: Mumbai Tops in India; London retains it's 1st Position

Mumbai is India's Top Student City according to QS.

Mumbai is the top student city in India. The city ranked 118th overall, up from 103rd in the previous year. Delhi is the second most student-friendly city in India, ranking 132nd. Bengaluru and Chennai ranked 147th and 154th, respectively.

QS ranked cities on six parameters: university rankings, student mix, desirability, employer activity, affordability, and student voice. Mumbai scored well in all of these categories, but its affordability was particularly impressive. The city is home to some of the best universities in India, and it also offers a diverse range of cultural and entertainment options.

Delhi is the second most affordable student city in India, and it also offers a number of world-class universities. Bengaluru is known for its thriving startup scene, while Chennai is a popular destination for students of engineering and technology.

All of the Indian cities in the QS rankings have seen a drop from their previous rankings. This is likely due to the increasing cost of living in India, as well as the growing competition from other student cities around the world.

Despite the drop in rankings, Indian cities remain popular destinations for international students. The country’s rich culture, delicious food, and vibrant nightlife are all major draws.
