Delhi University to implement one-year PG programs as part of its NEP compliance plan

Delhi University is planning to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) at the postgraduate (PG) level by offering a one-year course running alongside the existing four-year undergraduate programme. The university is developing a transitionary period to enable two-year and one-year master’s programmes. DU has already created MoUs with 25 foreign universities and plans to develop joint and twin degree programmes.

Delhi University, which successfully implemented the four-year undergraduate program (FYUP), is now preparing to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) at the postgraduate level. According to NEP guidelines, the PG program will be one year long and will run alongside the four-year UG program. Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh told the Times of India that both two-year and one-year master’s programs may coexist for a few years during the transition period.

The university is also actively developing modalities for twinning programs, which would allow DU students to study at foreign universities for a semester and earn credits. NEP will be three years old on July 29, and DU claims to be the first university to implement the FYUP.

Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said that Delhi University is working on implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) for postgraduate students. The university is focusing on the curriculum and modalities of the program.

A transitional period will allow both two-year and one-year master’s programs. Students graduating from other universities after a three-year undergraduate program will be eligible for the two-year postgraduate program, while those completing a four-year undergraduate program will qualify for the one-year postgraduate program.

DU has already established memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with 25 foreign universities and plans to develop twinning, dual, and joint degree programs. The university is also planning to offer academic mobility for students in central universities and ability-enhancement courses in the 22 languages of the Eighth Schedule.

To accommodate niche language courses with smaller student numbers, colleges will form clusters to offer joint teaching.

Dean of Academic Affairs K Ratnabali highlighted that the undergraduate curriculum framework is student-centric, multidisciplinary, and includes skill subjects and research and innovation. Additionally, the education policy supports lifelong learning, up-skilling, and re-skilling with a range of vocational courses catering to diverse interests, such as aquaculture entrepreneurship, fish farming, and ornamental fish production.

MBBS NexT Exam: Students file petition in Supreme Court seeking exemption

A group of 30 MBBS students from the 2019 batch have filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking exemption from the National Exit Test (NExT).

MBBS NExT Exam : A group of 30 MBBS students from the 2019 batch have filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking exemption from the National Exit Test (NExT). The students have argued that they are not prepared to write the NExT exam and that the previous rules that were in force in 2019 should be applied to them. They have also sought the cancellation of the mock/practice test of the NExT exam, which is scheduled to be conducted on July 28.

Confirming this decision, NMC in a public notice stated, “All the stakeholders are hereby informed that the National Exit Test (NExT) examination is deferred on the advice of the Ministry, dated 11.07.2023, till further directions from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.”

The petition has been filed at a time when the NMC has deferred the NExT examination for an indefinite period of time. The NMC had earlier announced that the NExT exam would be conducted for the 2019 batch, but this decision was met with opposition from students and doctors. They argued that conducting the NExT exam for the 2019 batch would be a violation of the NMC Act, 2019.

The Union Health Minister has also said that there will be no NExT Exam for the 2019 MBBS Batch and the exam will not replace the final MBBS examinations. However, there is still no clarity regarding the future of the NExT examination.

The petition filed by the MBBS students is likely to be heard by the Supreme Court soon. The court will have to decide whether to grant the students exemption from the NExT exam and whether to cancel the mock/practice test.

CUET UG 2023: Delhi University Alternatives to Keep Your Dreams Alive

If you didn’t make it to Delhi University through CUET UG 2023, don’t worry. There are still plenty of great ways to get a quality education. You could consider open and distance learning programs at DU School of Open Learning or IGNOU, or you could look at state or private universities. You could also prepare for other national-level entrance exams, or even explore studying abroad.

CUET UG 2023: Delhi University is one of the most prestigious universities in India, and it is no wonder that many students aspire to study there. However, not everyone is able to get into DU, and that’s okay. There are many other great universities in India that offer a quality education.

If you didn’t make the cut for DU, here are a few alternatives that you should consider:

Open and Distance Learning:

DU School of Open Learning (SOL) and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offer some of the best options for pursuing open and distance learning programs. These options cater to a variety of learners who may find it challenging to attend traditional on-campus programs.

State Universities:

Students who missed the opportunity for admission to Delhi University through CUET can consider applying to government-run universities in nearby states, such as:

  • Haryana University,
  • Rajasthan University, and
  • Uttar Pradesh University.
  • Universities of the NorthEast, such as Mizoram University, Nagaland University, Manipur University, Rajiv Gandhi University, Sikkim University, Tripura University, and Tezpur University are also quite popular for pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Private Universities:

Private universities offer diverse undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across various disciplines. Reputable private universities in Delhi/NCR, such as:

  • Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU),
  • Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI),
  • Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIIT),
  • Amity University,
  • Shiv Nadar University, and others

provide modern infrastructure, industry collaborations, and global exposure opportunities. However, it’s important to consider that private universities often come with higher costs compared to public or government universities.

Other Entrance Exams:

You may choose to prepare for other national-level entrance exams in India that offer admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate programs across different disciplines, such as:

  • Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) for engineering,
  • National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical programs,
  • National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) for integrated M.Sc. programs,
  • National Institute of Design Entrance Examination (NID DAT) for design courses, and
  • Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) for law programs.

Studying Abroad Options:

Studying abroad provides opportunities for personal and academic growth, cultural immersion, and career advancement. Students need to plan and research meticulously, considering factors such as academic interests, budget, long-term career goals, and admission requirements.
Countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Singapore are popular study destinations for Indian students.

Online Learning Programs:

Online education is cost-effective, flexible and accessible. Platforms like Coursera and EdX offer degree programs from leading universities across the program. Besides, online education also offers personalised learning experience, career advancement opportunities, development of technical skills, networking opportunities, and diverse course offerings.
In the end, always remember that failing to secure admission to Delhi University via the CUET does not mark the end of one’s educational journey. Besides the options mentioned above, one can also explore alternative career paths, vocational courses, or skill-based training programs and embark on a successful career journey.
