IIMs Admission criteria: Apart from your CAT 2022 score, what are the other criteria you must fulfill for gaining admission in MBA/ PGDM programs of the IIMs? The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are premier b-schools dedicated to postgraduate management education such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Fellow Program in Management (FPM) and Postgraduate Program in Management (PGP).
There are now a total of 20 IIMs in India that will be using CAT 2022 exam scores and other criteria for admission to their MBA/ PGDM courses. (Also read: CAT 2022 cut-off & other eligibility details for all IIMs)
While the details may vary, admission to all the 20 IIMs generally consists of two stages: the Common Admission Test (CAT) and shortlisting for some type of interview or additional examination. This second stage might include the Personal Interview (PI), Group Discussions (GD) and Written Ability Test (WAT). To gain admission to a school, you must:
All these factors may be taken into consideration when admission lists are prepared. Particular variables that may change across IIMs are academic cut-offs, weight given to various parameters and the admission process. Candidates may also apply with a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score for some schools. This is a process for candidates who have been living abroad, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) or foreign nationals.
After CAT results are published, individual IIMs announce short-listed candidates online for the next round of selection. Those candidates selected receive interview letters from the respective school. The steps of admission generally following the stages below:
If you are selected for an interview, your eligibility must be verified at that time. Confirmation of your eligibility may include your original degree certificate, mark sheets, or latest available marks/grades for final-year candidates. For reserved category candidates, your original caste/class/disability certificate is usually needed.
The interview process, which may include Group Discussion, Personal Interview or Written Ability Test, is generally conducted in a few cities across India.
The specific criteria for admission to all the 20 IIMs for management programs are now out. Please note that the selection process varies for each IIM. Click on each IIM’s name to understand the criteria for admission to that IIM:

Equivalent GMAT scores
GMAT scores from 700 to 800 are equivalent to CAT scores of 223 to 377. This is relevant for overseas candidates.
IIM Bangalore‘s process of admission to the PGP is explained below. Two parts make up the admission process: CAT and the Personal Interview. Candidates chosen for the interview will also write a one page note on a select topic provided by the school.
Topics for the note generally include current economic, political and business affairs and possibly other subjects requiring creative thinking. Interviewers evaluate the note and the candidate’s interview performance. Scores for the above, plus work experience and pre-Personal Interview parameters for selection determine the final selection stage.
The initial step in the selection process is the first shortlist (see table below from IIMB). Percentile cut-offs were not for those called for an interview, but rather the first step in selecting a group of candidates. Only CAT scores determined this list, but other steps of the admission process give weight to different parameters.
Minimum CAT 2022 percentile:
Category | Section 1 (QA+DI) | Section 2 (VA+LR) | Aggregate |
General merit | 80 | 90 | 90 |
NC-OBC | 70 | 80 | 80 |
SC | 50 | 50 | 70 |
ST | 50 | 50 | 70 |
DA | 50 | 50 | 60 |
Percentage scores on 10 and 12 Class board exams are then adjusted for first shortlist candidates by dividing each score by the 90th percentile score achieved in that particular board. Bachelor’s and professional degrees, where applicable, are then taken into account. Certifications are eligible for weightage under a professional course: Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accounting and Company Secretary certifications. This score is standardized for candidates in the first shortlist. Work experience is factored in as well.
The weights given to factors under consideration (apart from work experience or professional course or courses), are the following:
The top ten candidates in each section and total score from the first shortlist automatically qualify for the Personal Interview. However, these candidates must also achieve a particular composite aggregate score at the end of Phase 2 to merit selection.
The Personal Interview includes scoring of the one page note, according to quality of content and style. Three confidential letters of reference from employers or faculty must also be provided for evaluation in the interview. Averages of the scores below are taken into consideration in the Personal Interview process.
Weights given to scores:
Work experience and quality of experience are evaluated.
Final offers of admission are given solely based on ranking in each category of the final aggregate score. Admission is also available through GMAT (only for those residing abroad for at least 18 months over the past three years).
